Assess Your Space
The first step I take when considering a spring refresh for my outdoor spaces is to walk around and fully assess the areas. I look at the condition of my deck, patio, and yard with fresh eyes to determine what needs repaired, powerwashed, repainted, or replaced. I also think about how I want to use the spaces this year. Do I need more seating on the patio for entertaining? Would a fire pit extend the enjoyment of my deck? An assessment helps me identify problem areas and dream up ideas to optimize the use of the space.
Powerwash
A thorough powerwashing is one of the most rewarding spring cleaning tasks. Restoring my wood deck and concrete patio from the dirt, mold and mildew of winter gives an instant facelift. I use a heavy duty powerwasher for the best cleaning, taking care around railings or softer woods that could get damaged. It’s satisfying to see the space returned to its original color. A post-wash sealing may be needed on more delicate woods. Powerwashing my deck and patio sets the stage for any repair or decor upgrades.
Repairs and Improvements
With a clean slate, it’s easier to see what repairs or improvements are needed. Deck boards that are warped, cracked, or rotten need replaced. Nails or screws that have popped up are hazards that should be hammered back down. Weather stripping around doors may need replaced. For patios, I inspect the concrete for cracks or crumbling that requires patching or sealing. Improving the function and appearance could involve expanding the space with a paver patio or fire pit, staining a deck, adding benches, or installing landscape lighting. Determine priorities and tackle repairs first.
Furniture and Decor
Functional, comfortable outdoor furniture transforms the space. Evaluate what you have. Fix or replace broken pieces. Shop yard sales for inexpensive finds to upcycle. Add weather resistant cushions, pillows and rugs in bright patterns and textiles. Container gardens of flowers and plants bring color. Shelving or pot racks add places to display greenery. String lights draped overhead create ambiance for evening gatherings. Mirrors, wall art and decorative accessories give personality. A tidying, organizing and decluttering keeps items from looking cluttered.
Plantings
Assessing, pruning, cleaning out and enhancing the plantings around my deck, patio and yard is rewarding. Trimming overgrown bushes, weeding flower beds, adding mulch, and planting annuals in pots gives a vibrance. If grass is patchy, I may overseed or lay new sod. For the biggest impact, I consider removing old plants and doing new landscape design, or hiring a professional. Putting in flower beds, shrubs, or a privacy hedge can fully transform the space.
With a little time and creativity, I can refresh my outdoor spaces to get the most enjoyment out of them. A thorough cleaning, targeted repairs, new furnishings, and lush plantings give my deck, patio and yard a fresh new look to relax and entertain in for the season.
