Spring Cleaning for Pet Owners

As the weather warms up and I start opening the windows to let the fresh air in, I know it’s time to do my annual spring cleaning. But now that I have pets, I need to approach spring cleaning a bit differently to keep them safe, healthy and happy. Here’s my guide to spring cleaning with pets.

Organize and Declutter

The first step in my spring cleaning is organizing and decluttering. With pets, this takes a bit more care.

Safe Storage

I need to make sure everything is stored safely so my pets can’t get into things they shouldn’t. Some key tips:

  • Store household cleaners up high or in cabinets my pets can’t access.
  • Keep medications in secure, pet-proof containers.
  • Place breakable items on high shelves or in display cabinets.
  • Don’t leave any food or perishables sitting out – pets will help themselves!

Pet-Proofing

While decluttering, I check for any areas my pets could get hurt. I look for:

  • Fraying carpets or rugs they could catch a nail on.
  • Loose wires they could chew on.
  • Small objects they could swallow.
  • Sharp edges on furniture they could cut themselves on.

I fix any pet-proofing issues I find so my home is safe for them.

Donate Pet Items

I look for any unused pet items, like old toys or unneeded gear, that could be donated to an animal shelter. This declutters my home and helps shelter pets in need.

Deep Cleaning

Now it’s time for a deep clean to freshen everything up. I follow these pet-friendly cleaning tips:

Pet Messes

I tackle any pet stains or odors first. I use an enzymatic cleaner specifically formulated to eliminate pet odors and discourage re-soiling. For tough stains, I pre-treat the area first.

Floors and Carpets

I sweep and mop hard floors, then shampoo the carpets and rugs. I opt for pet-safe cleaners to avoid irritating my pets’ paws.

Furniture and Bedding

I launder all fabric furniture covers, pet beds, and pillowcases. This removes embedded pet hair, dander and odors.

Air Ducts and Filters

I have the HVAC system professionally cleaned to remove pet dander. I also change the air filters to improve indoor air quality.

Finish Up

The final step is finishing touches to complete my pet-friendly spring cleaning.

Grooming

I give my pets a good brushing and bath. This removes loose hair and makes sure they look (and smell!) their best.

Landscaping

I clean up the yard by mowing, weeding, and tidying. Then I check the fence for any needed repairs to keep my pets secure.

Windows

I wash the windows and window treatments so the sunshine can pour in!

Celebrate!

Finally, I reward myself and my pets with some playtime and treats. We can relax and enjoy the clean home together.

With some preparation and pet-safe practices, spring cleaning is manageable and keeps my home fresh and safe for everyone. The key is putting my pets first every step of the way.
