Spring Cleaning 101: Where to Start and What to Do

Introduction

Spring is here and that means it’s time for that annual ritual – spring cleaning! As exciting as it sounds, the prospect of deep cleaning your entire home can also be daunting, especially if you don’t know where to start. Not to worry, I’ve got you covered. Here’s my step-by-step guide to spring cleaning so you can spruce up your home with minimal stress.

Make a Plan

The first thing I do is make a plan of attack. Spring cleaning works best when it’s done methodically, one room at a time. I like to start with the kitchen and work my way through the house from there. For each room, I make a list of tasks – clean cabinets, wash windows, dust furniture, etc. Making a plan keeps me focused and ensures no area gets missed.

Pro tip: Set realistic goals for what you can accomplish each day. Don’t overschedule yourself or you’ll get overwhelmed.

Declutter First

Before I start cleaning, I tackle decluttering. I go through each room and get rid of stuff I no longer use or need. Clutter makes cleaning tougher, so this step is key.

I ask myself these questions for each item:

  • Have I used this in the past year? If not, toss it or donate it.
  • Does this still fit my style? Outdated decor and clothing gets donated.
  • Is this item broken or damaged beyond repair? Broken items get recycled or trashed.

Decluttering leaves me with only belongings I really love and use, resulting in a cleaner, more organized home.

Start With the Kitchen

With a plan made and clutter removed, it’s time to roll up my sleeves and start cleaning! I always start with the kitchen because it’s often the dirtiest room.

I tackle the kitchen in this order:

  1. Clean inside cabinets and drawers – Remove everything and wipe down shelves. Toss expired food and reorganize.

  2. Wash countertops and appliances – Use all-purpose cleaner and thoroughly disinfect. Pay extra attention to the sink, stove, and fridge.

  3. Wipe down outside cabinet fronts – Remove grease buildup for a shiny finish.

  4. Clean the floors – Sweep and mop floors. Get into corners and along edges.

  5. Wash windows – Use glass cleaner and paper towels. Do window sills too.

Cleaning the kitchen first gives me a sense of accomplishment. I’m fired up to move onto the next rooms!

Move Through the House Room by Room

With the kitchen sparkling, I work my way through the other rooms using my pre-made list. I save the bathrooms for last since they require heavy duty scrubbing.

Here are my tips for cleaning each room:

Living Room

  • Dust furniture, lamp shades, bookshelves, and knickknacks.
  • Vacuum upholstered furniture and rugs.
  • Use wood polish on wood furniture and clean glass tables.
  • Wash throw pillows and blankets.
  • Hang fresh curtains if needed.

Bedrooms

  • Strip bedding and wash on hot water setting.
  • Vacuum mattress and box spring.
  • Dust ceiling fan blades, baseboards, and windowsills.
  • Wipe down mirrors and windows.
  • Reorganize closets and dresser drawers.

Bathrooms

  • Scrub tile, tub, shower walls, and sink with bathroom cleaner.
  • Clean inside toilet bowl and tank with toilet brush.
  • Wipe down countertops and cabinets.
  • Clean mirror, light fixtures, and hardware.
  • Sweep and mop floors.

Other Rooms

  • Wipe down baseboards, door frames, vents, and light switches.
  • Clean out fireplace if you have one.
  • Dust ceiling corners, fans, and lamp shades.
  • Vacuum upholstered furniture and wash pillows and cushions.

Take it one room at a time and rejoice as your home transforms!

Don’t Forget the Finishing Touches

Once all the rooms are cleaned, I like to do a few finishing touches:

  • Clean entryways – Scrub entry rugs and wipe down front door.

  • Dust light fixtures – Use microfiber cloths and ladder if needed.

  • Clean windows – Wash inside and out, including screens.

  • Freshen air ducts – Vacuum vents and consider having ducts professionally cleaned.

  • Wash outdoor furniture and decor – Get patios and porches ready for summer entertaining!

These last tasks really make everything sparkle!

Conclusion

There you have it – my complete guide to spring cleaning success! The key is breaking it down room by room and staying organized. Declutter first so you’re only cleaning belongings you really need and use. Moving methodically through the house means no dusty corners are missed. Just pace yourself, drink lots of coffee, and turn up the tunes. Before you know it, you’ll have a spotless home ready for spring and summer fun!
