I used to dread cleaning day. Scrubbing bathrooms, mopping floors, and wiping down counters took up my whole weekend. But after learning some speed cleaning techniques, I can now tidy my entire home in just a few hours!
Make a Game Plan
Before I start cleaning, I make a plan of attack. This keeps me focused and helps me clean methodically room by room.
-
I break chores down into small, manageable tasks. For example, cleaning the kitchen includes wiping counters, doing dishes, sweeping, mopping, etc. Separating chores this way makes them seem less daunting.
-
I gather all my cleaning supplies in advance. I put all my sprays, rags, dusters, etc. into a caddy. This saves me from running around looking for things.
-
I make a checklist. I write down each little task room by room. Checking items off as I complete them gives me a sense of accomplishment.
-
I time myself. I use a timer to see how fast I can finish each task. Trying to “beat the clock” makes cleaning feel like a game.
Work Top to Bottom
I start cleaning at the top of a room and work my way down. This prevents me from re-cleaning the same surfaces.
-
I dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and tops of shelves and cabinets first. Otherwise dust just resettles later.
-
I clean counters and sinks next before sweeping and mopping floors last.
-
For bathrooms, I clean the mirror and shower walls first, then the sink and toilet, finishing with the floor.
Use the Right Tools and Products
Having the proper tools and cleaners streamlines my process. Here are some of my must-haves:
-
Microfiber cloths – The texture grabs and traps dirt better than rags or paper towels. I use different cloths for counters, mirrors, etc.
-
Vacuum with attachments – The narrow crevice tool lets me vacuum corners, baseboards, and furniture pieces much faster.
-
All-purpose cleaner – I keep a spray bottle diluted with an eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaner. It cuts through grease and grime on most surfaces.
-
Dishwasher tabs – These help blast off stuck-on food. I run the dishwasher instead of hand washing.
Work in Bursts
I clean in focused 15-30 minute bursts with 5-10 minute breaks in between. This keeps me from getting overwhelmed or bored.
-
I put on upbeat music during cleaning bursts to help me maintain momentum.
-
During breaks, I check my phone, grab some water, or do a few stretches.
-
Breaking tasks into manageable chunks with rewards in between helps the time pass quickly.
Enlist Help from Others
I don’t take on all the cleaning myself. I delegate tasks to other household members.
-
I ask my husband to vacuum, take out trash, and clean bathrooms. He’s happy to lighten my load.
-
I assign my kids age-appropriate chores like dusting, sweeping, and laundry. This teaches them responsibility.
-
We order takeout on cleaning days. No one wants to cook after all that work!
Maintain As You Go
I do mini cleans throughout the week to avoid big messes.
-
I tidy up the kitchen every night – wipe counters, load the dishwasher, sweep the floor.
-
I make the kids put away their toys and books before bed.
-
We immediately wipe up spills, take out trash, and pick up clutter.
This daily maintenance only takes a few minutes but keeps the house looking great all week. Come cleaning day, I just need to do a quick once-over.
Implementing these speed cleaning strategies has been life-changing. I no longer waste my precious weekends scrubbing. With a plan of attack, the right tools, and help from my family, I can now breeze through chores and enjoy more of my free time. What tips do you have for fast and efficient cleaning?
