Scrub-a-Dub-Dub: Finding The Best Bath Cleaners

Introduction

Keeping my bath clean is important to me. I want my tub, tiles, and fixtures to sparkle and be free of soap scum, mildew, and bacteria. However, with so many bath cleaning products on the market, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. In this article, I’ll share my tips for choosing the best cleaners for a fresh, sanitized bathroom.

Evaluating Your Cleaning Needs

Before buying any bath cleaning products, I take time to assess the surfaces and problem areas in my bathroom.

  • What material is my tub, surround, and fixtures made from? Enameled cast iron, fiberglass, porcelain, acrylic, and stainless steel all have different cleaning needs. Harsh chemicals can damage more delicate surfaces.

  • Do I need something to cut through soap scum on tiles or tubs? A product with ingredients like citric acid can dissolve sticky buildup.

  • Is mildew an issue in corners, on caulking, or around the tub drain? Bleach-based cleaners work best for killing and removing mildew and mold.

  • Are stains a problem? Oxygen bleach cleaners can lift stains without harsh fumes.

  • Do I want a disinfectant to kill germs? Look for EPA-registered antibacterial cleaners.

Choosing Bathroom Cleaning Products

Once I know my bathroom’s cleaning challenges, it’s time to pick the right products. Here are the cleaners I keep on hand for a fresh, clean bath.

All-Purpose Bathroom Cleaner

A good all-purpose cleaner like Lysol’s Power Toilet Bowl Cleaner works well for most of my routine cleaning. I use it to:

  • Clean the toilet bowl and wipe down the exterior
  • Remove soap scum from my glass shower doors and tub tiles
  • Disinfect handles, sinks, and countertops

I like that it kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria while leaving a pleasant scent. It’s an affordable cleaner that can tackle most bathroom surfaces, though harsh on delicate marble or natural stone.

Mold & Mildew Remover

To prevent mildew from taking hold, I regularly apply a mold and mildew remover like Tilex’s Mold & Mildew Remover. I spray it on:

  • Grout lines in shower tiles prone to mildew
  • Caulking around tub and shower
  • Ceiling corners where moisture can collect

The key ingredients, bleach and peroxide, quickly eliminate mold, mildew, and their musty smell. I do have to rinse it off surfaces after letting it sit, so it takes a bit more time than some other cleaners.

Tub & Shower Cleaner

For giving my tub and shower surround a deep clean, I love Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Grime Fighter. I spray it all over the walls, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe down. It cleans soap scum, hard water spots, and grime with minimal scrubbing.

Every few months, I also use it to give my fiberglass tub and shower floor a much needed refresh by spraying liberally, letting sit overnight, then rinsing – it gets them squeaky clean without damage.

Natural Cleaners

While most of my cleaners contain strong chemicals, I prefer to use natural options for some surfaces.

Castile soap, baking soda, and vinegar make excellent non-toxic cleaners. I use them to clean marble sinks and countertops that could be etched by acids or bleach. They keep surfaces free of bathroom grime and bacteria without harsh fumes.

Cleaning Routines for a Fresh Bath

To keep my bathroom sparkling, I stick to a regular cleaning routine:

  • Daily – Quick wipe down of sinks, counters, and toilet
  • Weekly – Thorough cleaning of all surfaces with all-purpose bathroom cleaner
  • Monthly – Prevent mildew growth with mold & mildew remover
  • Quarterly – Deep clean tub, tiles, shower with a foaming tub & tile cleaner

I also declutter once a week, store supplies in cabinets or baskets, ventilate the room during and after cleaning, and seal grout and caulk when needed.

Following a schedule and using the right cleaners keeps my bathroom fresh for guests and family. A little effort pays off with a clean, pleasant space.

Finding the Best Bath Cleaners

The array of bathroom cleaning products can seem endless. By assessing my needs, learning about ingredients, and trying various cleaners, I’ve found ones that work with my specific bathroom surfaces.

The key is using the mildest cleaner that still gets the bathroom clean and sanitized. I can now quickly tidy up soap scum, eliminate mildew, remove stains, and disinfect without damage. A shining, fresh bathroom makes all the testing worthwhile.

With the right cleaners and a good routine, I’ve discovered I can get my bathroom clean in minimal time. No more scrubbing away at soap scum or fighting mildew. I just need my cleaners, rags, and a little elbow grease for a sparkling space I’m proud of.
