How to Clean Your Mattress and Make it Look Brand New

Cleaning your mattress regularly is important for ensuring you sleep in a healthy environment. A buildup of dirt, dust mites, dead skin cells, and other allergens in your mattress can trigger allergic reactions and breathing issues. Fortunately, with some simple cleaning techniques and products, you can make your mattress look and feel like new again.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Vacuum cleaner – Use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment to suck up surface-level dirt and debris.
  • Baking soda – Helps deodorize and neutralize odors.
  • Distilled white vinegar – Sanitizes and removes stains without harsh chemicals.
  • Enzyme-based carpet cleaner – Breaks down organic matter like sweat and oils.
  • Hydrogen peroxide – Naturally whitens and brightens mattress fibers.
  • Essential oils (optional) – Add a fresh scent like lavender or tea tree.
  • Soft brush or cloth – Gently loosens and lifts dirt from fabric.
  • Mattress protector – Protects your mattress from future stains and soils.

Step 1: Strip the Bed

Remove all bedding, including the mattress pad, sheets, and pillows from the mattress. Take the pillows and bedding to the laundry to be washed separately. This will allow you to access the entire mattress surface for cleaning.

Step 2: Vacuum the Mattress

Use the upholstery attachment of your vacuum cleaner to thoroughly vacuum all surfaces of the mattress. Make sure to get into crevices and seams where dust collects. The suction will lift away loose dirt, skin flakes, dust mites, and other debris.

Step 3: Spot clean Stains

Inspect the mattress for any visible stains from sweat, urine, blood, or other bodily fluids. Mix a solution of 50% distilled white vinegar and 50% water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the stain, then use a soft cloth or brush to gently blot and rub the stain until it lifts away. The vinegar neutralizes odors and brightens the mattress fabric.

For tough organic stains, use an enzyme-based carpet cleaner. This will help break down the proteins in the stain. Allow the cleaner to sit for 30 minutes before dabbing it with a cloth. Avoid harsh bleaches or chemical cleaners, as these may damage the mattress over time.

Step 4: Sanitize with Baking Soda

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer that kills microbes and freshens mattresses. Sprinkle a thin layer evenly across the mattress surface. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes, or up to 24 hours for severe odors. The baking soda will pull odors and moisture out of the mattress fibers.

Step 5: Vacuum Again

Use the upholstery attachment of your vacuum to remove all of the baking soda from the mattress surface. Make sure to get into all the crevices. This is an important step to prevent the baking soda from getting kicked up into your sheets.

Step 6: Spot Disinfect with Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a mild but effective disinfectant for mattresses. Mix a solution of 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 4 parts water. Lightly spray or spritz this solution onto discolored or stained areas of the mattress. Allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes. The peroxide will naturally brighten and sanitize the mattress without harsh chemicals. Blot up any excess moisture with a clean cloth.

Step 7: Freshen with Essential Oils (Optional)

For an added fresh scent, you can lightly mist the mattress with a natural essential oil like lavender, tea tree, or eucalyptus. Mix 15-20 drops of essential oil per 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake well and lightly mist over the mattress. Allow to dry fully before putting sheets back on. The antimicrobial properties of essential oils will further sanitize the mattress.

Step 8: Allow to Dry

After cleaning, allow the mattress to air dry completely before making the bed again. This prevents mold or mildew growth. Place a fan nearby to speed up drying time.

Step 9: Use a Mattress Protector

To protect your mattress between deep cleanings, encase it in a waterproof mattress protector. Choose one with a cotton terry surface that absorbs moisture and protects against spills, sweat, and stains. Take off and launder the protector 1-2 times per month.

Following this thorough cleaning routine every 6-12 months will keep your mattress fresh, clean, and looking like new! Be sure to wash bedding frequently as well. With proper care, your mattress can last over 10 years before needing to be replaced. A clean mattress will lead to a healthier, more comfortable night’s sleep.
