How to Clean Windows Like a Pro This Spring

Spring is here and it’s time to let the fresh air in by opening up those windows! But before you do, you’ll want to make sure your windows are sparkling clean. As a professional house cleaner, I’ve perfected the art of cleaning windows so they look pristine. Follow my tips below and you’ll have windows so clear, it will feel like there’s no glass at all!

Assess the Windows

Before you get started, take a good look at each window inside and out. Check for any cloudy or stained areas that need extra attention. Also make note of any screens that can be removed to make cleaning easier.

  • Examine the windows from both the inside and outside. Stand back and look at them from different angles.
  • Pay particular attention to the edges and corners where dirt often accumulates.
  • Determine if there are any stubborn stains or debris stuck to the glass. This will help you plan which cleaning solutions to use.

Thoroughly assessing the windows is a key first step to tackling the job efficiently.

Gather the Proper Supplies

Cleaning windows well requires having the right tools. Here are the must-have supplies I recommend stocking up on:

  • A good window cleaning solution – Look for one that is specifically formulated for glass and won’t leave streaks. Ammonia-free cleaners are ideal.
  • Microfiber cloths and paper towels – Microfiber cloths do a great job of wiping away dirt without leaving lint. Absorbent paper towels help buff windows to a streak-free shine.
  • Squeegee – A professional-grade squeegee with a flexible blade will make quick work of clearing off cleaning solution.
  • Extendable duster – Use this to brush away out-of-reach cobwebs and dirt.

Don’t rely on old newspapers or cut-up t-shirts to clean windows – they simply push around dirt. Investing in quality supplies makes a huge difference!

Protect Yourself and Surroundings

Before getting started, take a few minutes to safeguard yourself and nearby furnishings:

  • Put on rubber gloves to keep your hands clean while working with chemicals.
  • Clear furniture away from windows to allow free access.
  • Lay down towels underneath to catch drips.
  • If cleaning outdoor windows above ground level, make sure you have secure footing via a sturdy ladder.

Taking protective measures ensures the cleaning process will be safe, mess-free and efficient.

Wash Windows and Screens Thoroughly

Now comes the satisfying part – time to wash away all that dirt and grime!

  • Fill a bucket with warm water and add a squirt of cleaning solution. Dip your microfiber cloth in and wring it out so it’s damp but not dripping.

  • Wash each window pane using an “S” pattern starting at the top corner and working side to side. Apply light, consistent pressure as you wipe.

  • Use a second microfiber cloth to dry the glass as you go. This prevents streaks and spots.

  • Repeat on outdoor side once interior is complete. Pay extra attention to wiping down frames and sills which attract dirt.

  • Scrub window screens outdoors with a brush and the cleaning solution. Let them air dry before replacing.

Take your time and do a thorough job washing each pane. The little details make a big difference!

Apply Elbow Grease to Stained Areas

If you noticed any especially dirty or stained areas during your initial assessment, roll up your sleeves and put some extra elbow grease into those spots:

  • For cloudy hard water stains, spread white vinegar over the area and let sit for a few minutes before scrubbing clean with a cloth.

  • To remove paint splatters, carefully scrape excess paint off with a plastic paint scraper, then clean the residue with soap and water.

  • For tough grease stains, apply baking soda and gently rub it around before wiping it away. The abrasive texture helps lift grease off.

Don’t be afraid to apply pressure and scrub when dealing with stubborn stains. Removing them fully ensures your windows look impeccably clean.

Finish with a Squeaky Clean Squeegee

The final step is using a squeegee to slick away all remaining water and leave a spotless, crystal clear finish.

  • Wipe the blade clean with a dry cloth before starting.
  • Apply cleaning solution to window and use the microfiber cloth to smooth it evenly over the glass.
  • Press the squeegee to the top corner and pull down firmly and steadily in an “S” motion.
  • Wipe the blade and repeat until fully dry.
  • Do the exterior side too for a complete sparkling clean!

It’s extremely satisfying seeing all that cleaning solution glide off, revealing shiny, pristine glass underneath. Those windows will look so clean, birds may fly into them!

Enjoy Your Sparkling Windows!

Follow these tips and soon you’ll be an expert at cleaning windows like a pro. Remember to:

  • Assess windows thoroughly first
  • Use proper cleaning supplies
  • Take protective measures
  • Wash inside and out using an “S” method
  • Scrub stained areas with specific solutions
  • Finish with a thorough squeegee clean
