How COVID-19 Has Changed the Cleaning Industry and What’s Next

The Cleaning Industry’s Pandemic Pivot

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the cleaning industry found itself thrust into the spotlight. Suddenly, everyone was acutely aware of the importance of cleanliness, hygiene, and sanitation. As businesses shuttered and people hunkered down at home, the demand for professional cleaning services skyrocketed.

I distinctly remember the first few weeks of the lockdown. The phones at our cleaning company were ringing off the hook with frantic requests from homeowners and business owners alike. They wanted their spaces disinfected, sanitized, and made as sterile as possible. It was a complete and utter upheaval of the industry as we knew it.

Overnight, the cleaning industry had to adapt and evolve to meet this new reality. We had to rethink our protocols, our equipment, our training – even our entire business models. It was a dizzying and stressful time, but also one that pushed us to innovate in ways we never could have imagined.

Cleaning Gets a Makeover

One of the most significant changes was the increased focus on disinfection and sanitization. Gone were the days of the quick surface wipe-down. Clients now demanded a rigorous, multi-step cleaning process that left no surface untouched. Electrostatic sprayers, UV light technology, and hospital-grade disinfectants became the new norm.

Cleaning professionals also had to adopt strict personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols. Masks, gloves, and protective coveralls were no longer optional – they were mandatory. We had to ensure our teams were not only cleaning to the highest standards, but also keeping themselves and our clients safe in the process.

But the changes went beyond just the cleaning itself. The pandemic forced us to rethink our entire service delivery model. In-person, on-site cleaning gave way to touchless, remote services. Clients wanted the peace of mind of a clean space without the risk of exposure. We had to rapidly develop virtual assessment tools, contactless payment options, and innovative scheduling systems to meet this demand.

The Silver Linings

As challenging as the past two years have been, the cleaning industry has actually emerged stronger and more resilient. We’ve seen an unprecedented level of investment and innovation in cleaning technology. From robotic floor cleaners to smart air purification systems, the tools at our disposal have never been more advanced.

Moreover, the pandemic has helped to elevate the perceived value of professional cleaning services. People now understand just how crucial a role we play in maintaining public health and safety. This has translated into higher demand, better pay, and greater respect for our industry.

In fact, the Global Service Firm reports that the commercial cleaning market is expected to grow by 10% annually over the next few years. That’s an incredible turnaround from the initial economic uncertainty.

The Future is Bright (and Clean)

As we look ahead, I’m incredibly excited about the future of the cleaning industry. The pandemic has accelerated trends that were already underway, like the adoption of green cleaning practices and the use of data-driven optimization.

Gone are the days of harsh chemicals and one-size-fits-all solutions. Clients are now demanding sustainable, eco-friendly cleaning products that are gentle on the environment but tough on germs. We’re also seeing a greater emphasis on indoor air quality, with advanced HVAC systems and air purifiers playing a crucial role in keeping spaces healthy.

Moreover, the International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA) reports that cleaning is becoming more data-driven and technology-enabled. Sensors, analytics, and smart building integrations are helping us optimize our processes, reduce waste, and deliver a better overall experience for our clients.

Of course, there are still challenges ahead. The labor shortage plaguing many industries is also affecting the cleaning sector. And as the pandemic continues to evolve, we’ll need to remain nimble and adaptable. But I’m confident that the cleaning industry is up for the task.

A Cleaner, Healthier Future

In the end, the COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally changed the way we think about cleaning. It’s no longer just about making things look tidy; it’s about safeguarding public health, protecting the environment, and elevating an entire industry.

As I reflect on the last two years, I’m incredibly proud of how the cleaning industry has risen to the occasion. We’ve proven our resilience, our innovation, and our unwavering commitment to keeping our communities safe and healthy.

And frankly, I can’t wait to see what the future holds. Because if there’s one thing I know for certain, it’s that the future is bright, and it’s clean.
