Identify and Avoid Your Allergens
The first step is to identify what you are allergic to so you can take steps to avoid exposure. Common household allergens include:
- Dust mites – Tiny insects that feed on dead skin cells. They are commonly found in bedding, carpets, stuffed animals and fabrics.
- Mold – A type of fungus that grows in moist areas like bathrooms, basements and kitchens.
- Pet dander – Microscopic pieces of skin and saliva shed by cats, dogs and other furry pets.
- Pollen – Tiny particles released by trees, grass, weeds and flowers. Can enter the home through open doors/windows.
- Chemicals – Found in cleaning products, air fresheners, scented candles and more.
I carefully read ingredient labels and avoid products that contain chemicals I’m allergic too. I also keep the house well-ventilated when using any scented products.
Use HEPA Vacuums and Filters
High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are great for trapping tiny allergens like dust, pet dander and pollen. I use a HEPA vacuum when cleaning carpets, furniture and curtains.
I also have HEPA air purifiers running in the bedrooms and common areas to filter allergens out of the air. I change the filters regularly per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Clean Thoroughly and Frequently
Since dust mites and pet dander contain allergens, it’s important to clean thoroughly and frequently. I wash all linens weekly in hot water to kill dust mites. I also wash stuffed animals, curtains and other fabrics regularly.
When dusting, I use microfiber cloths that attract and trap allergens instead of kicking them up into the air. I dust every week and also vacuum/sweep floors frequently.
Control Moisture and Mold
Excess moisture allows mold to grow quickly. To prevent this, I:
- Use bathroom fans or open windows during and after showering
- Use a dehumidifier to keep indoor humidity low
- Quickly clean up spills and leaks
- Avoid overwatering houseplants
- Make sure rainwater flows away from the home’s foundation
I clean moldy surfaces with a mix of bleach and water. I address any moisture issues like roof leaks right away to stop mold at the source.
Choose Allergen-Free Bedding
Since I spend lots of time in bed, I make sure my bedding is allergy-friendly. I have mattress and pillow covers to seal out dust mites. I wash sheets, pillowcases and blankets in hot water weekly. I avoid down-filled comforters as they can contain dust mite matter. Cotton, synthetic and microfiber bedding are better allergy-wise.
Use Air Filters on Forced Air Systems
If you have forced air heating/cooling, make sure to use the highest quality air filter recommended for your unit. I change the filter every 1-3 months to prevent buildup of allergens. High-MERV rated pleated filters work best for allergies. I also avoid placing furniture directly over vents which can collect dust.
Bathe Pets Regularly
To control pet dander, I bathe my cats weekly and brush them outside the home. I also wash all pet bedding regularly in hot water. Keeping Fido and Fluffy out of the bedroom prevents dander buildup on bedding.
Clean Then Disinfect
Disinfecting kills germs but not allergens, so it’s important to clean before disinfecting. I use a microfiber cloth, soap and water to thoroughly clean surfaces. Then I disinfect using an allergy-friendly disinfectant like hydrogen peroxide, tea tree oil or rubbing alcohol.
Control Cockroaches and Other Pests
Pests like cockroaches and rodents can trigger allergies too. I keep food sealed and surfaces clutter-free to discourage pests. I avoid toxic pesticides and use boric acid/diatomaceous earth instead. Sealing cracks/crevices prevents pests from entering.
Schedule Deep Cleanings
In addition to weekly cleaning, it helps to do seasonal deep cleanings. I thoroughly wash bedding, rugs, furnishings and other fabric items twice a year. I also declutter to remove dust traps and use high-quality HEPA vacuum attachments to remove allergens from walls, vents, baseboards and tight spaces.
Staying on top of household allergens takes diligence but is worth it for a symptom-free home. Let me know if you have any other allergy cleaning tips!
