Good Fortune: New Year’s Cleaning

I’ll admit it – I’m not the biggest fan of cleaning. There, I said it. But you know what they say, a clean house is a happy house. And as we usher in a brand new year, I can’t help but feel the urge to scrub away the remnants of 2021 and welcome 2022 with open (and sparkling clean) arms.

A Cleaning Frenzy

This past week, I’ve been in a full-blown cleaning frenzy. We’re talking scrubbing the grout, tidying the drawers, and giving every nook and cranny a thorough once-over. I think I’m really trying to scour away the dust and grime of 2021 and create a shiny, fresh start for the new year. Call it superstition, call it OCD – I call it my New Year’s tradition.

You see, I’ve always been a firm believer in the power of starting the year off on the right foot. And for me, that means a clean and organized home. There’s just something about walking into a sparkling clean space that fills me with a sense of optimism and possibility. It’s like I’m wiping the slate clean, ready to embrace all the good fortune and potential that the new year has to offer.

The Hopping John Connection

As I’ve been elbow-deep in cleaning supplies, I’ve also been indulging in another one of my favorite New Year’s traditions – making a big pot of Hopping John. According to folklore, eating this delicious dish of black-eyed peas, rice, and greens on New Year’s Day is said to bring good luck for the year ahead.

Now, I don’t know if there’s any scientific evidence to back up this superstition, but I do know that Hopping John is just plain delicious. It’s a comforting, nourishing dish that’s been passed down through generations, and it’s a ritual I look forward to every January 1st. As I stir the pot and watch the flavors meld together, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for the year to come.

The Deeper Meaning

But there’s more to Hopping John than just its purported lucky properties. This dish has a rich history and cultural significance that goes beyond the superstitions. According to some accounts, Hopping John originated with enslaved Africans who brought the dish to the American South, where it became a staple in plantation kitchens. The black-eyed peas, which are said to resemble coins, and the greens, which represent paper money, are thought to symbolize the hope for prosperity in the new year.

There’s also a theory that the dish’s name comes from the “hopping” or dancing that children would do around the stove, eagerly anticipating their New Year’s supper. Personally, I’m a big believer in dancing, and I like to think that a little bit of that joyful energy goes into every bite of Hopping John.

The Clean Slate

As I stir my pot of Hopping John and gaze around my freshly cleaned home, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for the year ahead. It’s like I’m starting with a clean slate, ready to embrace all the possibilities that 2022 has in store.

Sure, there are no guarantees that a plate of rice and beans will bring me good luck or that a thorough cleaning will erase the challenges of the past year. But there’s something to be said for the power of ritual and tradition. By honoring these customs, I’m not just following in the footsteps of those who came before me – I’m also tapping into a deeper well of human experience and connection.

Embracing the Uncertainty

Of course, not everyone buys into the superstitions and folklore surrounding the new year. Some might say it’s all just a bunch of hogwash, and that’s totally fine. We all have our own ways of welcoming in the new year, and there’s no right or wrong way to do it.

Personally, I like to keep an open mind. I’m not so much a believer in the idea that a single dish or cleaning ritual can determine the course of the entire year. But I do think there’s value in embracing the uncertainty and mystery of the unknown. By engaging in these traditions, I’m acknowledging the vast and complex tapestry of human experience, and that there’s still so much we have yet to understand.

A Fresh Start

As I put the finishing touches on my Hopping John and take one last sweep through the house, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement for what lies ahead. Sure, there may be challenges and uncertainties in the year to come, but isn’t that part of the adventure?

By starting the year with a clean slate and a nourishing meal, I’m setting the stage for a fresh start. Who knows what the new year has in store? But one thing’s for sure – I’m ready to embrace it, dirty laundry and all. After all, a little cleaning can go a long way in creating the perfect environment for new beginnings.

So here’s to a brand new year, full of possibility and promise. Whether you believe in the power of Hopping John or the virtue of a spotless home, may 2022 bring you all the good fortune and joy you deserve. Cheers to a clean slate and a delicious new start!
