From Spiritual Practice

A Journey of Cleaning and Contemplation

As I step into the home of my client, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation. It’s not just the excitement of tackling a new cleaning challenge, but the opportunity to embark on a deeper journey – one that intertwines the physical act of cleaning with the spiritual practice of mindfulness.

You see, for me, Adam Cleaning is more than just a job; it’s a calling, a way of life that allows me to connect with the sacred in the mundane. Each task, from dusting the shelves to scrubbing the floors, becomes a meditation, a chance to be fully present and attentive to the moment.

It all began a few years ago when I stumbled upon an article that spoke of the transformative power of spiritual practices. The author, Lacy, from A Sacred Journey, eloquently described spiritual practices as “a regular rhythm that calls us to return and remember – to return to our intention and remember what it is that we seek.”

As I read those words, a light bulb went off in my mind. Cleaning, in its essence, is a ritual, a repetitive act that can be elevated to a spiritual practice. It’s not just about achieving a sparkling, spotless environment; it’s about cultivating a sense of presence, connection, and reverence for the world around us.

Embracing the Quiet

One of the key aspects of my spiritual cleaning practice is the embrace of silence. Marcia Eames-Sheavly, a Courage & Renewal facilitator, eloquently described the power of silence in her article “Honest and Open Questions as a Spiritual Practice.” She shared her realization that “the soundtrack would settle down and all that I was doing was deeply listening for real.”

When I arrive at a client’s home, I take a moment to pause, to quiet the chatter in my mind and truly listen to the space. I notice the subtle hum of the refrigerator, the gentle creak of the floorboards, the whisper of the wind through the windows. It’s in these moments of stillness that I can connect with the energy of the home, sensing its needs and the intention of the residents.

Seeing with New Eyes

As I begin to clean, I approach each task with a sense of reverence and curiosity. Drawing inspiration from Anne Perschel’s article “Work as a Spiritual Practice,” I strive to see my work not as a means to an end, but as a transformative journey in itself.

I gently wipe away the dust from the shelves, marveling at the intricate patterns left behind. I scrub the floors with diligence, feeling the muscles in my arms engage as I work. And with each stroke of the cloth or swipe of the mop, I can almost sense the space exhaling a sigh of relief, as if it’s grateful for the care and attention I’m bestowing upon it.

Connecting with the Divine

Meryl Davids Landau’s article “Silence is a Most Profound Family Spiritual Practice” touched me deeply, reminding me of the power of silence to connect us with the divine. As I move through the home, I find myself slipping into a meditative state, my breath synchronizing with the rhythm of my movements.

In these quiet moments, I feel a sense of oneness – not just with the space I’m cleaning, but with something greater, a cosmic energy that permeates all things. It’s a feeling of being a conduit, a vessel through which the sacred can flow, infusing every task with a deeper purpose.

Transformative Moments

Perhaps the most profound aspect of my spiritual cleaning practice is the transformation I witness, both in the spaces I clean and within the clients themselves. As Brandon Cook, lead pastor at Long Beach Christian Fellowship, eloquently wrote in his article “Transformation: Marrying Spiritual Practice to Confession,” “Only when you name and label something is it able to be transformed.”

I’ve seen it time and time again – a client’s eyes light up as they step into their freshly cleaned home, their shoulders visibly relaxing as the weight of their daily stresses melts away. It’s as if the physical act of cleaning has unlocked something deeper within them, a connection to a more authentic version of themselves.

And in those moments, I feel a deep sense of gratitude, not just for the opportunity to do this work, but for the privilege of bearing witness to these transformative moments. It’s a reminder that the act of cleaning, when imbued with intention and presence, can be a sacred practice, a doorway to self-discovery and spiritual renewal.

So, as I continue on my journey of cleaning and contemplation, I know that each task, each client, and each moment holds the potential for deeper connection, greater awareness, and profound transformation. It’s a path that I’m honored to walk, one that reminds me of the beauty that can be found in the most ordinary of moments.
