Introduction
As a parent, keeping my home clean and healthy for my children and pets is a top priority. However, I also want to be mindful of using cleaning products that are safe and eco-friendly. Here’s what I’ve learned about eco-friendly cleaning for a healthy home environment.
Dangers of Conventional Cleaners
Many conventional cleaning products contain harmful chemicals like ammonia, bleach, phthalates, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These chemicals can cause or exacerbate:
- Asthma and respiratory issues
- Skin irritation
- Nausea and headaches
- Hormone disruption
- Cancer
Children and pets can be especially vulnerable since they spend lots of time indoors and close to floors where cleaning chemicals linger.
Benefits of Eco-Friendly Cleaners
Eco-friendly cleaners are made from plant-based and mineral-based ingredients that are biodegradable and non-toxic. Here are some key benefits:
-
Safer for kids and pets: No harsh fumes or chemicals that can irritate their skin, eyes, lungs.
-
Better for the environment: Made from renewable resources and break down safely without polluting waterways.
-
Just as effective: Plant-based cleaners can disinfect and deodorize as well as traditional cleaners when used properly.
-
Cost-effective: Homemade cleaners are very affordable to make. Commercial green cleaners may cost more upfront but you use less product.
Tips for Green Cleaning
Here are some of my top tips for effective eco-friendly cleaning around kids and pets:
Use Microfiber Cloths and Mops
Microfiber cloths are amazing at trapping and removing dirt, dust, and grime with just water. No need for harsh chemicals! I use them for everything from floors to counters to windows.
Make Your Own Cleaners
DIY cleaners like vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and Castile soap can tackle over 90% of household cleaning tasks. Here are some of my go-to recipes:
-
All-purpose cleaner: 1⁄2 cup vinegar, 1⁄4 cup baking soda, 2 cups hot water, 10 drops lemon essential oil
-
Glass cleaner: 1⁄4 cup vinegar, 2 cups water, 5 drops lemon essential oil
-
Toilet cleaner: 1⁄4 cup baking soda, 1 cup vinegar – sprinkle baking soda in bowl then pour in vinegar and let fizz
Ventilate While Cleaning
Open windows and use fans to circulate fresh air. Avoid having kids and pets in the immediate area while cleaning.
Use Safer Disinfectants
Look for plant-based disinfectants like thyme oil or hydrogen peroxide. Only use bleach products when truly necessary.
Choose Fragrance-Free
Fragrances can contain hormone disruptors. Opt for cleaners that are fragrance-free or use natural scents like essential oils.
Eco-Friendly Products to Try
Here are some of my favorite commercial green cleaning brands that are safe for families:
-
Seventh Generation: Excellent all-purpose cleaners, dish soap, laundry detergent. Their disinfectant spray is great for counters.
-
Method: Good for hand soap, all-purpose cleaner, bathroom cleaners. Love their grapefruit scent.
-
Mrs. Meyer’s: Amazing scented soaps and cleaners. Their geranium multipurpose cleaner works on everything.
-
ECOS: Budget-friendly cleaners, detergents, soaps. Their magnesium chloride disinfectant is pet-safe.
-
Biokleen: Specialize in plant-powered cleaners like Bac-Out for kitchens/bathrooms. Has enzyme stain removers.
The key is reading labels and choosing fragrance-free plant-based cleaners whenever possible. With a little diligence, we can keep our homes clean and healthy for our kids and furry family members.
