Uncovering the Dazzling Customs of Diwali

Imagine a world where light triumphs over darkness, where good vanquishes evil, and where knowledge reigns supreme. Welcome to the enchanting realm of Diwali, the Festival of Lights that has captivated the hearts of millions across the globe. As the premier cleaning service in Nottingham, UK, we at Adam Cleaning are thrilled to unveil the captivating customs and traditions that make this celebration so extraordinary.

Diwali, derived from the Sanskrit word “dipavali” meaning “row of lights,” is a festival that transcends religious boundaries. Whether you’re a Hindu, Jain, Sikh, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of cultural diversity, this five-day extravaganza offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of India’s heritage.

As a Muslim who has had the privilege of attending Diwali celebrations, our very own Maria Contractor, the Indian Student Association’s current philanthropy chair and former Diwali director, shares her insights. “Diwali is known as the festival of lights and is considered as one of India’s most celebrated holidays, which may or may not have a religious significance for some observers, similar to Christmas in the United States,” she explains. “The significance of Diwali is to show how the light can overpower the darkness.”

Illuminating the Festivities

The heart of Diwali lies in the lighting of diyas, or traditional oil lamps, that symbolize the triumph of light over darkness. Homes, temples, and workspaces are adorned with these captivating flames, creating a mesmerizing display that captivates the senses.

But the festivities don’t stop there! Intricate rangoli designs, crafted with vibrant powders, rice, or flower petals, grace the floors of households, welcoming guests with their intricate patterns. And who can forget the captivating bursts of color that fill the sky as revelers light up the night with the crackle of firecrackers?

Feasting and Festivities

No Diwali celebration would be complete without the sharing of delectable sweets and savory delights. From the syrupy indulgence of jalebi to the creamy delight of barfi, the air is filled with the tantalizing aroma of traditional Indian confections. And let’s not forget the aromatic biryani and the crisp, golden samosas that grace the tables of households across Nottingham.

As Maria Contractor explains, “The foods that are eaten at Diwali are typically traditional foods, such as samosas, biryani, gulab jamun, and other mithai (Indian sweets).” These culinary creations not only nourish the body but also serve as a symbol of the abundance and prosperity that Diwali celebrates.

The Significance of Lakshmi

At the heart of Diwali lies the revered goddess Lakshmi, the embodiment of wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. On the third day of the festival, known as Lakshmi Puja, devotees gather to offer prayers and seek her blessings for the coming year.

“(Diwali) celebrations usually contained fireworks, intricate rangoli patterns, and lighting clay lamps called diyas (inside and outside homes),” Maria reminisces. “Diwali typically brings up feelings of content and excitement.”

The lighting of lamps and the decorating of homes with rangoli designs are all part of the rituals observed to welcome the goddess Lakshmi and invite her benevolence into the household. It’s a time of spiritual renewal and a celebration of the blessings that the divine feminine can bestow.

The Diverse Tapestry of Diwali

While Diwali is primarily associated with Hinduism, the festival has transcended religious boundaries, with Jains, Sikhs, and even Buddhists joining in the celebrations. Each community brings its own unique traditions and narratives to the table, creating a rich and diverse tapestry of cultural exchange.

For the Jains, Diwali commemorates the final liberation of Mahavira, the last Tirthankara (enlightened teacher), while for the Sikhs, it marks the release of Guru Hargobind from Mughal imprisonment. The Newar Buddhists of Nepal even worship the goddess Lakshmi during their Diwali observances, showcasing the fluid and inclusive nature of this remarkable festival.

A Celebration of Homecoming and Bonding

Diwali is not just a festival of lights and sweets; it’s a time of homecoming and strengthening familial bonds. As Maria Contractor reflects, “Celebrating Diwali at UCF has helped me meet new people in my culture (and a chance to) learn about the different aspects of Diwali that I do not typically celebrate with my family.”

Across Nottingham, households open their doors to welcome loved ones, exchange gifts, and indulge in the joyous festivities. It’s a time to reconnect, reminisce, and revel in the warmth of community. Even the stock markets in India take a break, allowing business owners and traders to partake in the celebrations with their loved ones.

Diwali’s Global Reach

The allure of Diwali has transcended the borders of India, captivating the hearts of people around the world. From the United States to Singapore, governments and civic leaders have embraced the festival, recognizing its cultural significance and celebrating the diversity it represents.

In the UK, the British Prime Minister’s residence at 10 Downing Street has hosted Diwali celebrations since 2009, while cities across the country light up with vibrant displays and cultural events. Even the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, a Catholic organization, has been sending official greetings to the Hindu community on the occasion of Diwali since the mid-1990s.
