Deep Cleaning Flooded Basements

Flooded basements can be a big mess to clean up. Muddy water leaves behind dirt, debris, and moisture that can lead to mold growth if not properly addressed. Deep cleaning a flooded basement takes time and labor, but it’s important to do it right to get your basement fully restored. Here is an in-depth look at the deep cleaning process:

Assessing the Damage

The first step is to pump out any standing water and assess the extent of the flooding damage. Some key things I look for include:

  • Thickness of silt deposits – Flooding leaves behind a filmy layer of silt over every surface. The thicker it is, the more extensive the water damage.

  • Warping or water stains on walls/floors – This indicates absorbed moisture that could lead to mold growth.

  • Condition of drywall and insulation – Extremely saturated drywall and insulation may need replacement.

  • Functionality of electrical outlets/appliances – Any outlets submerged in water are a hazard until inspected.

  • Status of HVAC system – Floodwaters can damage HVAC components like ductwork and the furnace/air handler.

I take photos and detailed notes on the damage to create a restoration plan.

Removing Standing Water

To start the cleaning process, I use a gas-powered water pump and/or wet/dry shop vacuum to remove all standing water. I try to get water levels down to 1/8 inch or less if possible. Extensive water removal may take several days for a severely flooded basement.

I also open any basement windows to maximize air circulation and place axial fans to blow air over wet areas. Increased air flow helps evaporation.

Cleaning Surfaces

With dry floors, the dirty work begins. I wear waterproof boots, gloves, eye protection and an N95 respirator mask.

For silt deposits, I use a stiff push broom and heavy duty shop vac. Silt left behind by floodwaters is a very fine powder that requires a lot of sweeping and vacuuming. I go over every surface multiple times to lift all the silt I can.

For general cleaning, I use the following process:

  1. Dry scrubbing – I use bristle brushes and microfiber cloths to rub away dirt/grime.

  2. Wet scrubbing – I apply an all-purpose cleaner and scrub again. For moldy areas, I use a mold killing solution.

  3. Rinsing – I rinse surfaces thoroughly with a garden hose with a pressure nozzle.

  4. Extracting – I use a wet/dry shop vac to extract as much water as possible.

For porous materials like insulation, drywall or fabrics, I take a different approach to avoid further water damage:

  • Carefully remove and discard any insulation or fabrics showing signs of mold.

  • Gently dry scrub walls and ceilings with a microfiber mop. Avoid pressure washing.

  • Use fans and dehumidifiers to completely dry out these materials.

Drying Out the Basement

Even after deep cleaning, excess moisture may linger in flooded basements. I use the following drying techniques:

  • Keep windows open for airflow.
  • Run 1-2 box fans blowing over wet areas.
  • Use portable dehumidifiers to reduce humidity.
  • Check relative humidity with a hygrometer and keep below 50%.
  • Consider renting industrial dehumidifiers for severe moisture issues.

I monitor basement humidity daily until the reading stays below 50% for several days. Extended drying times may take 2-4 weeks.

Mold Prevention

The biggest health hazard after flooding is mold growth. To prevent mold from gaining a foothold:

  • Dry out the basement fully before rebuilding.
  • Discard any porous materials with mold contamination.
  • Apply a mold killing solution when cleaning.
  • Monitor humidity levels and take action if moisture rises.
  • Hire a mold remediation company for contamination beyond 10 square feet.

Following these flood cleanup guidelines helps restore a damaged basement to a cleaner, drier and healthier condition. Let me know if you need help with your flooded basement restoration project.
