I love having a clean and tidy home, but it can be a challenge to keep every nook and cranny spotless. A deep clean of your home from top to bottom is a great way to get your space shining from ceiling to floor. Here is my guide to deep cleaning your home from top to bottom:
Develop a Plan of Attack
The first step is deciding what areas you want to tackle and creating a plan. Here are some areas to consider including in your deep clean:
High Traffic Areas
- Living room
- Kitchen
- Bathrooms
- Entryway
Less Used Spaces
- Guest bedrooms
- Inside kitchen cabinets
- Behind and under furniture
Often Neglected Spots
- Windows
- Baseboards
- Ceiling fans
- Air vents
- Under appliance
Once you’ve made your list, prioritize the areas and decide what you can realistically get done in a day. Trying to deep clean everything at once can feel overwhelming. Focus on 1-2 rooms or areas at a time.
Gather Your Supplies
Having the right tools makes deep cleaning much easier. Stock up on:
- All-purpose cleaner
- Glass cleaner
- Disinfecting wipes and sprays
- Baking soda and vinegar
- Microfiber cloths
- Dusting wand
- Vacuum
- Mop and bucket
- Rubber gloves
- Step stool
Start at the Top and Work Your Way Down
It’s best to start high and work your way down. This prevents dust and grime from resettling onto already cleaned lower surfaces.
Ceiling and Walls
Use a dry microfiber cloth on a wand to dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and the tops of walls. For cobwebs in corners, attach a microfiber cloth to a broom or duster.
Windows
Clean inside and out with glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth. Use a step stool if needed. Don’t forget window sills and frames!
Air Vents and Baseboards
Use a small vacuum brush attachment to clean out air vents. Wipe baseboards down with an all-purpose cleaner and microfiber cloth.
Furniture
Thoroughly wipe down surfaces of furniture with a cleaner appropriate for the material. Vacuum underneath and behind furniture that you can move.
Flooring
Sweep then mop tile, vinyl, and wood floors. Vacuum and steam clean carpeting. Get into corners and along baseboards.
Deep Clean the Kitchen
The kitchen sees a lot of action, so give it an intensive deep clean.
-
Clean inside cabinets and drawers – Remove everything and wipe down shelves and surfaces. Vacuum out crumbs.
-
Organize pantry – Toss expired items, wipe down shelves, and neatly arrange items by category.
-
Clean appliances – Remove grease and food residues from the stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, and small appliances. Don’t forget the exhaust fan filter!
-
Scrub the sink – Use baking soda and vinegar to remove stains and make the stainless steel shine.
-
Clean flooring – Sweep and mop tile floors. Vacuum carpets and area rugs.
Sanitize the Bathrooms
Bathrooms harbor lots of germs. Disinfect these areas thoroughly:
-
Toilet – Scrub the bowl with a toilet brush and bleach-based cleaner. Wipe down the seat, tank, base, and the exterior.
-
Sink and countertops – Use a non-abrasive cleaner and disinfect with a bleach-based spray.
-
Shower and tub – Remove soap scum and mildew with a scrub brush and bathroom cleaner. Rinse and squeegee to minimize water spots.
-
Mirrors and glass – Clean with glass cleaner. Remember the mirror frame too!
-
Flooring – Mop tile floors with a disinfecting cleaner. Vacuum and shampoo bathroom rugs.
Don’t Forget Hidden Areas!
Deep clean forgotten areas like:
- Closets – declutter and vacuum
- Under beds – vacuum and wipe down
- Furniture cushions – vacuum and spot clean
- Electronics – dust and disinfect
- Doors and door frames – clean and wipe down
Take time to tackle these often neglected zones for a truly thorough clean.
Finish by Taking Out the Trash
The final step is removing all garbage accumulated from cleaning. Bag up any items to donate or throw away. Take out trash and recycling bins.
Congratulations, your home is now deeply cleaned from top to bottom! Maintain this level of cleanliness by tackling one area at a time daily or weekly. Enjoy your fresh, tidy home.
