I’ve made a list of my absolute expenses – the things I must pay to maintain my current lifestyle, like rent, utilities, and basic necessities. Everything beyond that is a want, not a need. This helps me clearly see where my money is going and where I can cut back.

Building an Emergency Fund

It’s important to have a savings cushion for those unexpected life events. The general rule of thumb is to have 3-6 months’ worth of living expenses tucked away. This gives you a financial safety net and can help alleviate the fear of letting go of material possessions.

Selling vs. Donating

As I mentioned earlier, the time and effort required to sell items often isn’t worth the small amount of money you might get. Unless it’s a high-value item, I’d recommend donating or recycling whenever possible. It saves you the hassle and allows you to focus on the bigger picture.

I won’t lie, transitioning to a minimalist lifestyle wasn’t easy. There were times when I felt like I was losing a part of myself, letting go of the things I had accumulated over the years.
