Cleaning Windows, Mirrors and Glass for Crystal Clear Clarity

Introduction

Keeping windows, mirrors, and glass surfaces sparkling clean not only makes your home look great, but also allows natural light to flow through unobstructed. However, effectively cleaning glass requires using the right techniques and products to avoid streaking, smudging, and spots. In this article, I will share my top tips for cleaning windows, mirrors, and other glass surfaces to achieve crystal clear clarity.

Supplies Needed

Before getting started, make sure you have the proper supplies on hand:

  • Glass cleaner – Use a high quality glass cleaner formulated for windows and mirrors. Avoid multi-surface cleaners.

  • Microfiber cloths – Microfiber cloths are essential for streak-free shining. Use one for cleaning and one for buffing/drying.

  • Squeegee – A squeegee speeds up drying and reduces streaks on larger windows.

  • Soft scrub brush – For tougher dirt or grime, use a soft brush to gently scrub.

  • Ladder/step stool – Safely reach all areas of windows and mirrors.

Cleaning Windows

Washing Windows

  • Start by mixing a spray bottle of glass cleaner according to the directions. Do not dilute with water.

  • Apply the glass cleaner liberally to the window surface until thoroughly coated.

  • Using your scrub brush, gently agitate any dirt or debris. Pay extra attention to the corners and edges of the window.

  • Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the glass cleaner, dirt, and grime off the window. I prefer using vertical S-shaped motions when washing.

  • Flip and refold the cloth frequently to prevent spreading around dirt.

Drying and Polishing Windows

  • After washing, use a dry microfiber cloth and squeegee (if large enough window) to dry and polish the window.

  • When using a squeegee, wipe in an S-pattern – horizontally, then vertically. Overlap passes slightly.

  • For smaller windows, use a dry microfiber instead, wiping in tight, circular motions. Switch to vertical S-motions as the window dries for a streak-free finish.

  • Inspect closely and re-wipe any streaks that appear.

Window Cleaning Tips

  • Clean windows on overcast days – Direct sunlight causes faster drying and streaking.

  • Start at the top and wipe downward – This avoids drips on already cleaned areas.

  • Don’t press too hard – Let the tools and cleaners do the work. Excess pressure can cause streaks.

  • Get to edges and corners – Dirt loves to hide in crevices.

Cleaning Mirrors

Cleaning mirrors follows a similar process as windows:

  • Spray mirror cleaner directly onto a microfiber cloth. Avoid spraying liquids directly on a mirror.

  • Using a damp cloth, wipe mirror using vertical S-shaped motions.

  • Rinse cloth frequently and reapply cleaner as needed.

  • Use a dry microfiber in circular then vertical motions to polish and remove streaks.

  • Inspect closely for any remaining spots or streaks. Re-wipe and polish if needed.

Some extra tips for mirrors:

  • If the mirror has a wooden frame, wipe it down separately first with a lightly dampened cloth.

  • Avoid abrasive scrubbers – They can damage and scratch mirror surfaces over time.

Cleaning Shower Doors and Glass

Shower doors, glass shower walls, and bathroom mirrors often have soap scum, hard water deposits, and mildew that require extra cleaning power. Here’s how to tackle them:

  • Once a week, spray shower glass liberally with an all-purpose bathroom cleaner formulated for soap scum and mildew removal.

  • Let it soak 5-10 minutes. Apply a mild scrub brush on trouble spots if needed.

  • Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Squeegee shower doors dry when done.

  • Follow weekly cleaning by using daily shower spray after each use to prevent buildup.

  • For soap deposits on glass, use a vinegar-water solution (1 part vinegar, 3 parts water). Scrub and rinse.

Achieving Crystal Clear Clarity

The key to sparkling clean windows, mirrors, and glass is having the right tools and techniques. Be sure to use quality glass cleaners, soft microfiber cloths, and gentle scrub brushes. Wipe in overlapping vertical S-shaped motions, and finish by buffing in tight circles with dry microfibers. Inspect closely, re-wiping any spots or streaks. With these tips, you’ll achieve crystal clear clarity throughout your home’s glass surfaces.
