Cleaning your home can feel like an endless chore. As busy lives get busier, finding ways to clean faster and smarter is key. With some simple cleaning hacks, you can get your home sparkling clean without spending all day on your hands and knees scrubbing. Here are some of my favorite cleaning shortcuts to help save time on chores.
Use Microfiber Cloths and Mops
Microfiber cleaning tools are total game changers when it comes to cleaning efficiently. The ultra-fine microfiber fabric traps dirt, grease, and dust much better than traditional materials like cotton.
Microfiber cloths grab onto dirt and grease without the need for chemical cleaners. I use them dry for dusting and wet for wiping down countertops, appliances, windows, and mirrors. They clean with just water and get into crevices that paper towels miss. I have microfiber cloths stashed all over my house – in the kitchen, bathrooms, and even my car.
Microfiber mops have become my new best friend. I can quickly mop my floors without having to break out the bucket and wringer. The microfiber pad acts like a magnet for dust and dirt. When it gets dirty, I just remove the pad and throw it in the wash. Microfiber mops allow me to mop floors in a fraction of the time.
Clean Smarter, Not Harder
Sometimes it pays off to work smarter, not harder when it comes to cleaning. Here are some of my favorite ways to simplify chores:
-
Clean top to bottom – When cleaning a room, work from the top down. This prevents dirt and dust from the upper areas resettling onto already cleaned lower surfaces.
-
Group like tasks – Do all your dusting at once, wipe down surfaces together, and vacuum everything in one sweep. Grouping similar chores makes cleaning more efficient.
-
Set a timer – Setting a timer prevents getting sucked into cleaning rabbit holes. Stay on task by setting a timer for 10 or 15 minutes per chore.
-
Tackle trouble spots – Focus on dirty spots like baseboards, ceiling fans, and door handles periodically to prevent heavy buildup.
-
Wipe as you go – Throughout the day, do mini wipe downs in high traffic areas like counters, sinks, and tables. This prevents big messes from accumulating.
Speed Clean Your Kitchen
The kitchen can be one of the most time consuming rooms to clean. Use these speed cleaning hacks to get it done faster:
-
Wipe down fronts of cabinets and appliances before floors – this prevents having to re-clean from floor dust and splatters.
-
Use a two bowl method for washing dishes – fill one with soapy water and the other with rinse water to prevent having to continuously wash out your sponge.
-
Clean the sink last – that way you can dump dirty water and give it a final wipe down after everything else is done.
-
Stove top scrubs – Sprinkle baking soda, spray with vinegar, and let bubble for 5 minutes before wiping away grease and grime from drip pans and burners.
Make Your Own Cleaners
Harsh chemical cleaners are expensive and not healthy to have around the house, especially if you have kids or pets. Luckily, it’s easy and cheap to mix up your own effective cleaners with just a few ingredients:
-
All-purpose cleaner – Mix 1 part white vinegar and 1 part water in a spray bottle. Add 5-10 drops essential oil if you want a scent. The acid in the vinegar dissolves dirt, grease, and grime.
-
Glass cleaner – Mix 2 parts water, 1 part vinegar, and 1/2 teaspoon dish soap in a spray bottle. The soap helps cut through greasy fingerprints and water spots.
-
Disinfecting wipes – Soak paper towel sheets in a 1:1 vinegar and water solution with several drops of tea tree or lavender oil which have disinfecting properties. Keep refrigerated in a container.
DIY cleaners are inexpensive, safe for the environment, and effective at cleaning and disinfecting my home. Making my own allows me to clean every week without creating unnecessary plastic waste or spending too much.
Have the Right Tools Handy
Having the right cleaning tools close by in each room makes cleaning fast and easy. Here are some of the supplies I keep on hand to achieve a sparkling clean house in less time:
In the Kitchen
– Microfiber cloths
– All-purpose cleaner
– Dish soap
– Sponge and scrub brush
– Paper towels
In the Bathrooms
– Microfiber cloths
– Disinfecting wipes or spray
– Toilet brush
– Grout brush
For Dusting
– Microfiber duster
– Handheld vacuum
For Floors
– Microfiber mop
– Broom and dustpan
Having the right equipment eliminates wasting time tracking down tools or supplies when I want to knock out a quick cleaning task.
Make a Schedule
Having a cleaning schedule helps ensure things don’t get out of hand and helps me stay on top of chores without spending all my free time cleaning. Here is an example of a basic cleaning schedule:
- Daily – Quick tidy and wipe kitchen counters
- Weekly – Dust, vacuum, mop floors
- Monthly – Clean windows, mirrors, change sheets
- Yearly – Wash walls, flip mattresses, shampoo upholstery
Splitting cleaning tasks by frequency prevents any job from becoming too big and overwhelming. I try to spend 10-15 minutes per day on small daily tasks which helps a lot.
Implementing these cleaning hacks has truly been a game changer for me. I can now get my whole house clean in just an hour or two instead of spending my entire weekend scrubbing and sanitizing. The right tools, techniques, and schedule have given me back more free time without sacrificing a clean home. What are your favorite time-saving cleaning hacks? I’d love to hear tips to add to my arsenal!
