Make the Most of Limited Storage
Living in a small space doesn’t mean you have to feel cluttered or cramped. With some clever organization hacks, you can maximize every inch of storage and keep things tidy.
Use Storage Bins and Baskets
Storage bins and baskets are great for corralling items and making the most of vertical space. Install shelving on walls or inside closets and use fabric bins to store items like linens, clothing, toys, and more. For a unified look, opt for baskets in the same color and material. Label each bin so you know what’s inside at a glance.
Stackable plastic bins are ideal for storing craft supplies, tools, and other household items. Look for narrow bins that can slide onto shelves. I love using clear bins so I can easily see contents.
Opt for Multi-Functional Furniture
Furniture with hidden storage compartments helps eliminate clutter while taking up a small footprint. For instance, I use a storage ottoman in my living room to stash blankets and board games. My coffee table lifts up so I can conceal remotes, coasters, and more when not in use.
In the bedroom, choose a bed with drawers underneath to store extra linens and clothing. You can also find desks and nightstands with shelves or cubbies built in.
Install Shelving in Wasted Space
Take advantage of the often forgotten space between wall studs by installing shelves in closets. You can double your storage capacity. I used shelf brackets and boards to create open shelving in my linen closet.
Other smart spots for extra storage include above washer/dryers, behind open doors, and under sinks. Even a few inches of depth can hold small cleaning products, toilet paper, and other essentials.
Keep Only the Essentials
To keep a small home tidy, be ruthlessly selective about what you keep. Stick to items you use and love.
Get Rid of Clutter
Go through your belongings regularly and purge anything you don’t need. I like to do this twice a year – in the spring and fall. Be sure to clear surfaces like counters, tables, and dressers of non-essential knickknacks and decor.
Avoid Accumulating Too Much Stuff
Before buying something new, ask yourself if you really need it and where you’ll store it. I have a strict “one in, one out” policy to avoid overload. If I purchase a new sweater, I donate or sell an old one.
Gift-giving holidays are when clutter tends to accumulate. Talk to loved ones about exchanging consumable gifts like candles or gift cards rather than physical items.
Use Space-Saving Design Tricks
Look for furniture and organizational items designed to save space, such as nesting tables, fold-away laundry hampers, or bedside shelves that mount to the wall.
A hanging shoe organizer inside your front door provides a spot to stash hats, gloves, umbrellas, and other items. Over-the-door hooks offer a place for coats.
Keep Cleaning Quick and Simple
Staying on top of cleaning is essential when spaces are compact. Here are some of my best tips for maintaining tidiness.
Do a Quick Daily Tidy
It takes just a few minutes a day to stay ahead of the clutter. I make my bed, quickly pick up any items that are out of place, do any dishes, and wipe down counters. This prevents messes from getting out of control.
Focus on High-Traffic Areas
Pay the most attention to keeping entryways, main living spaces, and the kitchen clean since these get used the most. For instance, sweep the hallway floor a couple times a week and do a deep clean of the oven every month.
Have a Place for Everything
Ensure items have designated homes so they can be easily returned once used. For example, I keep a small tray by the door where I always place my keys, sunglasses, and reusable shopping bags.
Limit Cleaning Supplies
Only keep your most-used all-purpose cleaner, cleaning cloths, disinfecting wipes, and other supplies. Look for multi-use products when possible. Store extras like the mop and broom in a closet or cabinet.
Final Thoughts
With some smart storage solutions and regular tidying, even the smallest home can stay neat and organized. Remember to eliminate clutter regularly, make the most of every inch, and keep cleaning simple. A little effort goes a long way in a small space!
