Clean Laundry Rooms Top to Bottom this Spring

Assess the Current State of Your Laundry Room

Spring is a great time to freshen up your home, and the laundry room is often a forgotten space that could use some extra attention. Before diving into a major clean and reorganization, take some time to assess the current state of your laundry room.

  • Walk through the space and make notes on problem areas that need improvement. Pay attention to clutter, built up laundry detergent, dust, and any leaks or spills that may have accumulated over the winter.

  • Check the functionality of your appliances and fixtures. Is your washing machine draining properly? Do any knobs or handles need repair? Identify any issues.

  • Consider how you use the space. Is the room cramped or inefficient? Could you add storage or rearrange appliances to improve workflow? Figure out changes to make the laundry routine more convenient.

Deep Clean Surfaces, Appliances, and Utility Connections

Once you’ve evaluated the overall space, it’s time for a deep clean. Cleaning first allows you to wipe away built up grime and truly refresh the laundry room before adding organizational systems.

  • Clean inside and out of the washer and dryer. Use hot water and an all-purpose cleaner. Run an empty wash cycle with bleach or vinegar to disinfect.

  • Scrub inside sink basins with a soft scrub cleaner. Use a toothbrush to clean faucet fixtures.

  • Wipe down countertops, floors, walls and cabinets. Use a multipurpose cleaner and rinse thoroughly.

  • Dust vents, light fixtures, pipes and utility connections. Use a dry microfiber cloth to capture dust and dirt.

  • Clean lint trap and inside dryer vent duct. Remove lint with a vacuum hose attachment. Use a vent brush to dislodge stuck-on debris inside the duct.

Improve Workflow and Storage

Once a thorough deep clean is complete, it’s time to optimize the space. Evaluate what is working well and what could be improved in your unique laundry room.

  • Add storage bins, shelves or racks for laundry essentials. Keep detergent, spot removers and cleaning tools organized.

  • Install hanging racks for air drying delicate items. Free up washer space and prevent wrinkles.

  • Designate a folding station with a counter, storage and comfortable chair. Separate clean and dirty laundry zones.

  • Improve lighting. Add task lighting above folding areas. Ensure you can easily see laundry tasks.

  • Consider laundry room accessories like rug grippers, hampers with pockets and artwork to personalize.

Maintain a Fresh Laundry Room

Regular maintenance will help keep your laundry room organized and refreshed after your seasonal deep clean.

  • Wipe surfaces and wash out the sink weekly.

  • Use towel bars for rags to limit mess. Toss dirty rags in the wash immediately.

  • Empty lint trap after each dryer use.

  • Sweep and mop floors every few weeks.

  • Re-stock cleaning supplies as needed.

  • Do a seasonal deep clean every spring and fall.

With a little elbow grease and organization, your laundry room can go from drab to fab this spring! A functional, fresh laundry space makes tackling this tedious chore much more pleasant.
