Confessions of a Lady Landlord: How I Finally Conquered Bathroom Mould

As a landlord with over 17 years of experience, I’ve seen my fair share of mould-related drama. From damp corners to bathroom ceilings that look like they’re auditioning for a horror movie, this pesky fungus has a knack for making itself right at home in our properties.

But let me tell you, I recently faced a mould battle that took my landlord skills to the next level. It all started with a new tenant – let’s call her Insanity Obsessed – who seemed to have a penchant for constant showers and a complete disregard for proper ventilation. The result? A bathroom ceiling that was practically growing its own ecosystem.

I’ll admit, when I first saw the extent of the mould infestation, I let out a groan that could have shaken the foundations of the building. Black, fuzzy patches had taken over the entire ceiling, making it look like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. And trust me, scrubbing it with a bleach solution was about as effective as asking a toddler to tidy their room.

As I discovered on, the real culprit behind this mould madness was the cold, uninsulated ceiling. When warm, moist air from all those Insanity workouts met the chilly surface, it created the perfect breeding ground for our fuzzy, black friend, Aspergillus Niger.

Introducing the Mould-Busting Ceiling Makeover

Now, I could have simply slapped on a coat of stain-blocking paint and called it a day, but where’s the fun in that? No, I decided to get my hands dirty and tackle this problem head-on. Armed with my trusty power tools and a keen eye for design, I set out to create a warmer, more mould-resistant ceiling.

The plan was simple: construct a new, slightly lower stud frame and fill the gaps with some high-quality insulation. This way, the ceiling would be far less tempting for those pesky water molecules, and Aspergillus Niger would have to look elsewhere for his next cozy home.

As I got to work, I couldn’t help but channel my inner Bob the Builder. Measuring, cutting, and carefully weaving the insulation between the timber frame – it was like a well-choreographed dance. And let me tell you, the satisfaction of seeing those rigid Kingspan blocks wedge snugly into place was almost as good as the feeling of a freshly-cleaned bathroom.

The Finishing Touches

With the insulation in place, it was time to bring in the big guns: the plasterboard. I opted for the trusty Knauf variety, not only because it’s a quality product, but also because I had a few extra pieces lying around. Call me a frugal landlord, but I hate to see good materials go to waste.

As I fixed the plasterboard to the frame, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride. This wasn’t just a quick fix – this was a long-term solution to a problem that had plagued me (and my tenants) for far too long. And let me tell you, the final result was nothing short of a work of art.

Mould-Free Bliss: The Reveal

When the ceiling was finally skimmed and painted, the transformation was nothing short of remarkable. Gone were the unsightly black patches, replaced by a smooth, clean surface that practically radiated warmth. It was like the bathroom had undergone a complete makeover, and I couldn’t wait to see the look on Insanity Obsessed’s face when she saw the results.

Of course, as a seasoned landlord, I know that prevention is key when it comes to mould. That’s why I’ve made sure to educate all my tenants on the importance of proper ventilation, regular cleaning, and keeping an eye out for any suspicious-looking fungus. After all, a little bit of prevention can go a long way in keeping those mould spores at bay.

So, if you’re a fellow landlord (or even a homeowner) struggling with the constant battle against bathroom mould, take it from me: a little bit of elbow grease and a well-insulated ceiling can work wonders. And who knows, you might even discover your inner handyman in the process.
