Gather Your Supplies
Before I start cleaning my bathroom, I make sure I have all the necessary supplies ready. Here is what I typically need:
-
Cleaning solutions: An all-purpose cleaner, a toilet bowl cleaner, a tub and shower cleaner, and a glass/mirror cleaner. I prefer using eco-friendly products when possible.
-
Cleaning tools: A sponge or scrubbing brush, toilet brush, plunger, cleaning cloths and towels, rubber gloves, and a bucket. Microfiber cloths are great for cleaning mirrors and glass.
-
Vacuum cleaner: I use my handheld vacuum to pick up dust and hair around the bathroom floors before mopping.
-
Mop and broom: For sweeping and mopping the floors.
-
Dusters: To dust bathroom surfaces. I use a telescoping duster to reach high areas.
-
Trash bags: To dispose of any waste.
Clean the Sink and Countertops
I start with the sink and countertops since these tend to collect the most grime. Here are the steps I follow:
-
Remove everything from the countertops and sink and put items away.
-
Fill the sink halfway with warm water and add a few drops of dish soap. Let it sit for 5 minutes to loosen dirt.
-
Scrub the sink basin and countertops with a sponge or scrubbing brush and the all-purpose cleaner.
-
Use a toothbrush to scrub stubborn spots and around the faucet.
-
Rinse everything thoroughly and dry with a clean cloth.
-
Wipe down counters with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
-
Replace items back on the counters.
Scrub the Toilet Bowl
Cleaning the toilet is one of the less pleasant tasks. I protect myself by wearing rubber gloves during this step.
-
Lift the toilet seat and flush to rinse the bowl first.
-
Squirt toilet bowl cleaner under the rim and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
-
Scrub the bowl thoroughly with a toilet brush, including under the rim.
-
Flush to rinse.
-
Wipe down the toilet seat, lid, tank, and base with disinfectant.
-
Rinse the toilet brush and let it air dry.
Clean the Shower and Bathtub
Hard water spots and soap scum can build up quickly in the shower. I use a specialized shower cleaner for this part:
-
Apply tub and shower cleaner evenly throughout the tub and shower walls.
-
Let the cleaner sit for 5-10 minutes.
-
Use a sponge or scrubbing brush to agitate and remove stubborn grime.
-
Rinse thoroughly with hot water.
-
Plug the drain and spray glass cleaner onto shower doors or walls.
-
Wipe clean with a microfiber cloth.
-
Rinse tub and shower walls again.
Dust and Wipe Surfaces
This next step helps make everything shine:
-
Use a duster to remove dust from bathroom surfaces and vents.
-
Wipe down the medicine cabinet, mirrors, shelves, light fixtures, and switch plates with glass cleaner.
-
For metallic surfaces like faucets, showerheads, and towel racks, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with all-purpose cleaner.
-
Wipe down the walls with a clean, wet microfiber cloth to remove stains.
Sweep and Mop the Floors
With all the grime removed from the rest of the bathroom, I can now focus on the floors:
-
Sweep floors with a broom to remove any loose dirt and dust.
-
Fill a bucket with warm water and all-purpose floor cleaner.
-
Submerge the mop head in the water and wring out thoroughly.
-
Mop the floors in sections, rinsing and wringing the mop as needed.
-
Rinse the mop head thoroughly after mopping the whole floor.
-
Let floors air dry completely.
Take Out the Trash
The final step is taking out the trash:
-
Tie up and remove trash bags from the small bathroom trash cans.
-
Replace with new trash bags.
-
Empty vacuum debris and wipe down the vacuum, if needed.
