7 Unexpected Places Youre Forgetting to Clean

1. The Inside of Your Microwave

When was the last time you cleaned the inside of your microwave? Many of us forget to clean this hardworking appliance regularly, leading to a buildup of spills, splatters, and odors. The microwave handles your food, which means it’s crucial to keep it clean and hygienic.

To clean the microwave, I start by removing the glass turntable and washing it with hot, soapy water. Next, I mix a solution of equal parts water and vinegar, heat it in the microwave for a minute or two, and then wipe down the interior with a damp cloth. This helps break down any stubborn grime or stains.

But don’t stop there! I remove the vent grill and clean the area behind it, as it can accumulate dust and debris over time. And don’t forget to wipe the exterior and clean the door seals to keep your microwave looking fresh.

2. Light Fixtures and Ceiling Fans

When was the last time you looked up and noticed the dusty state of your light fixtures and ceiling fans? These oft-overlooked areas can quickly accumulate dust, cobwebs, and even dead insects, which can be an eyesore and potential health hazard.

To clean light fixtures, I turn off the power and use a microfiber duster or a slightly damp cloth to wipe away any dust or debris. For ceiling fans, I start by dusting the blades with a microfiber duster or a pillowcase slipped over the blade to catch the dirt.

After dusting, I mix a solution of warm water and a mild detergent, dip a cloth into the solution, and wring it out until it’s just damp. Then, I wipe down each blade, paying attention to the crevices where dust can accumulate. Don’t forget to clean the motor housing and light fixtures on the ceiling fan as well.

3. Behind and Under Large Appliances

When was the last time you moved your refrigerator, oven, or washer and dryer to clean behind and underneath them? These areas can be a breeding ground for dust, dirt, and even pests if left untouched for too long.

To tackle these often-neglected spaces, I begin by unplugging the appliance and pulling it away from the wall or its designated spot. Next, I use a vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool or a long-handled duster to remove any visible dirt, dust, or debris.

Once the area is free of loose debris, I mix a solution of warm water and a mild cleaning solution, dip a cloth or sponge into the solution, and wring it out until it’s just damp. I scrub the floor and walls behind and underneath the appliance, paying attention to any stubborn stains or buildup.

After cleaning, I allow the area to dry completely before replacing the appliance in its original spot.

4. Window Tracks and Sills

When was the last time you cleaned the window tracks and sills in your home? These areas can accumulate dirt, dust, and even mold or mildew if left unchecked, which can not only be unsightly but also potentially harmful to your health.

To clean window tracks and sills, I start by using a small brush or vacuum cleaner attachment to remove any loose debris or dirt. Next, I mix a solution of warm water and a mild cleaning solution or vinegar, dip a small brush or toothbrush into the solution, and scrub the tracks and sills.

For stubborn grime or buildup, I use a paste made from baking soda and water, apply it to the affected areas, and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing with the brush. Once the area is clean, I wipe it down with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly.

5. Tops of Cabinets and Shelves

When was the last time you looked up and noticed the dust and grime accumulated on the tops of your cabinets and shelves? These often-overlooked areas can be a real eyesore and can even contribute to indoor air pollution if left unchecked.

To clean the tops of cabinets and shelves, I start by removing any items or decor that may be in the way. Next, I use a microfiber duster or a vacuum cleaner attachment to remove any loose dust or debris.

For stubborn grime or buildup, I mix a solution of warm water and a mild cleaning solution or vinegar, dip a cloth or sponge into the solution, and wring it out until it’s just damp. I wipe down the tops of the cabinets and shelves, paying attention to any crevices or hard-to-reach areas.

Once the surfaces are clean, I allow them to dry completely before replacing any items or decor.

6. Baseboards and Corners

When was the last time you cleaned the baseboards and corners of your rooms? These areas can accumulate dust, dirt, and even cobwebs if left unattended for too long, which can be unsightly and even contribute to indoor air pollution.

To clean baseboards and corners, I start by using a vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool or a small brush to remove any loose debris or cobwebs. Next, I mix a solution of warm water and a mild cleaning solution or vinegar, dip a cloth or sponge into the solution, and wring it out until it’s just damp.

I wipe down the baseboards and pay attention to any crevices or hard-to-reach areas, using a small brush or toothbrush to scrub away any stubborn grime or buildup. For especially dirty or scuffed baseboards, I use a magic eraser or a paste made from baking soda and water to help lift the stains.

Once the baseboards and corners are clean, I allow them to dry completely before moving on to the next area.

7. Pet Beds and Toys

If you have furry friends at home, when was the last time you cleaned their beds and toys? These items can harbor pet hair, dander, and even odors if not cleaned regularly, which can be unpleasant for both you and your pets.

To clean pet beds, I start by removing any loose hair or debris with a vacuum cleaner or lint roller. Next, I check the care instructions for the bed and wash it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, using a mild detergent and warm water.

For pet toys, I start by sorting them into groups based on their material (plush, rubber, plastic, etc.). For plush toys, I wash them in a mesh bag in the washing machine using a mild detergent and warm water. For rubber or plastic toys, I soak them in a solution of warm water and a pet-safe disinfectant, scrub them with a brush if needed, and rinse them thoroughly.

After cleaning, I allow the pet beds and toys to air dry completely before returning them to their designated areas.

Remember, regular cleaning of these often-overlooked areas not only helps maintain a clean and healthy living environment but can also extend the lifespan of your belongings and appliances. Don’t let these unexpected places slip through the cracks – add them to your cleaning routine for a truly spotless home.
