Prepare to Re-Enter After Crime Scene Cleanup

Understanding the Crime Scene Cleanup Process

Before I can re-enter a location after a crime scene cleanup, it’s important that I understand the cleanup process from start to finish. Crime scene cleanup technicians use special equipment and chemicals to restore the area to a sanitary condition.

The cleanup typically involves:

  • Initial assessment of the scene to determine the extent of the biohazard materials that need to be removed. This can include bodily fluids, blood spatter, decomposition, and other potentially infectious materials.

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) like hazmat suits, gloves, booties, and respirators to prevent exposure during cleanup.

  • Documentation through photos and notes detailing contamination.

  • Isolation of the affected area to prevent cross-contamination.

  • Removal and disposal of biohazard materials according to regulations. This usually requires special transport and disposal methods.

  • Cleaning using disinfectants, sanitizers, and deodorizers to eliminate remaining hazards. Multiple cleaning methods may be used for thorough decontamination.

  • Verification that the area meets sanitation standards for safe human re-entry. This may involve testing and inspection.

Timing Re-Entry After Cleanup

I should wait until I’ve received official notice from the cleanup company before re-entering the affected area. They will determine if the location is safe based on rigorous contamination testing.

I should never attempt to re-enter prematurely, as this could expose me to lingering health hazards. Even if an area appears clean, biological contaminants could still be present. The cleanup experts need to verify safety first.

Once I’ve received the all-clear, I can begin re-entering immediately. There’s no need to wait additional time if the professionals have declared the site fully decontaminated. However, I may want to take extra precautions at first, like wearing gloves and masks, in case any residues linger.

Gradual Re-Acclimation After Re-Entry

When first re-entering a location after crime scene cleanup, it’s best to gradually acclimate to reduce anxiety. Prolonged or repeated exposure allows me to process being in the space again.

I may want to start by just standing in the area briefly before slowly increasing my time spent inside over several days or weeks. Having a support person present initially can also help ease the transition.

During this process, I should notice if any specific spots trigger stronger emotional reactions. I can avoid those areas until ready or ask the cleanup company to do additional work there. Creating new memories through remodeling, decorating and spending time with loved ones also helps overwrite traumatic associations.

Seeking counseling to process emotions may make re-acclimation smoother. With time, my distress entering the location should decline. However, if anxiety persists, moving may be healthiest. Forcing myself to be in a space that no longer feels safe can be re-traumatizing.

Seeking Normalcy After the Ordeal

Re-adapting to a location post-crime scene cleanup takes time, but establishing normal routines again is key. Small everyday habits create continuity and a sense of control.

I might find comfort in activities like:

  • Cooking familiar recipes in my kitchen
  • Sitting in my favorite living room chair
  • Sleeping in my own bed on my regular schedule
  • Showering in my bathroom to start my day
  • Reading the morning paper at the table

Engaging in these familiar rituals helps me reclaim the space as my own. With each day, it will hopefully feel more normal and less like a crime scene. Starting therapy, joining a support group, or keeping a journal also helps process the trauma so I can move forward.

While it takes great strength and courage to re-enter an affected area, embracing normalcy again is possible. With patience, time, and support, I can heal and create new memories here. This space can feel like home once more.
