Why It’s Important to Clean Windows and Mirrors
Having clean, streak-free windows and mirrors makes a huge difference in the appearance of a home. When light shines through clean glass, it makes rooms seem brighter and more inviting. Likewise, clean mirrors give an accurate reflection and add elegance to bathrooms and other spaces. Allowing windows and mirrors to become streaked and dirty takes away from the beauty of a home.
Supplies Needed
Cleaning windows and mirrors to a sparkling shine requires just a few basic supplies:
Cleaning Solutions
-
Glass cleaner – An ammonia-free glass cleaning solution helps lift dirt and grease while evaporating quickly to reduce streaks. Spray bottles allow controlled application of the cleaner.
-
Distilled white vinegar – The acidic properties of vinegar help dissolve mineral deposits left behind by hard water. Mix equal parts vinegar and water for an effective cleaning solution.
Cleaning Tools
-
Microfiber cloths – Microfiber cloths are lint-free and will not leave behind fibers or streaks. Dampen them with cleaning solutions to wipe down glass surfaces.
-
Squeegee – A window squeegee scrapes water off glass efficiently after washing to prevent spots and streaks as it dries.
-
Paper towels – Absorbent paper towels help wipe away excess cleaning solution and dirt.
Cleaning Process
Follow these steps for streak-free, sparkling clean windows and mirrors:
1. Dust and Prepare the Surface
Use a dry microfiber cloth or paper towel to wipe away any loose dirt and dust from windows and mirrors prior to washing. Make sure the glass surfaces are free of smears or debris that could cause scratches during cleaning. Draw the blinds or curtains to keep direct sunlight from heating the glass and causing rapid drying.
2. Wash with Cleaning Solution
Spray glass cleaner onto the microfiber cloth rather than directly onto the glass. Wipe down the entire surface of the window or mirror using a side-to-side motion. Turn and fold the cloth frequently to avoid simply spreading dirt around. Work from top to bottom on windows.
Vinegar solution can also be used for stubborn hard water spots. Let the vinegar sit for a few minutes before wiping to allow it to dissolve mineral deposits.
3. Squeegee and Wipe Dry
Once washed, use a squeegee on windows to scrape off all excess cleaning solution. Wipe mirrors dry with a clean microfiber cloth. Buff the edges and corners of the glass carefully to absorb any remaining moisture.
4. Inspect and Repeat if Needed
Look closely for any remaining dirt or streaks. Rewash and dry any problem spots until the glass sparkles. Natural light will highlight any areas that need extra attention.
