For a gentler formula, I mix 2 teaspoons olive oil with 1 teaspoon lemon juice. The oil breaks up grime, while the acid in the lemon juice cuts through grease and residue. This solution can be massaged onto wood furniture and surfaces using a soft cloth. I rub gently with the grain to condition the wood while polishing. Rinse and dry with a clean cloth.
Baking soda is a versatile plastic-free cleaner. For windows and mirrors, I mix 2 tablespoons baking soda with 1 quart water in a spray bottle. I spray surfaces lightly then wipe clean with newspaper or a lint-free cloth. The baking soda solution lifts dirt while the newspaper gives an amazing streak-free shine.
Making Your Own Plastic-Free Polishing Pads
Many commercial polishing pads contain plastics and other synthetics. Natural fiber cloths are a better choice. Old cotton t-shirts make excellent reusable rags and polishing pads. For a more lavish homemade solution, I sew together scraps of soft silk, hemp, or bamboo into polishing pads. These natural fabrics are ultra-gentle on surfaces. When the pads get dirty, I toss them in the wash to reuse.
If you want something more scrubby for tougher cleaning jobs, loosely woven natural fiber cloths work perfectly. Hemp and jute cloths have a slightly abrasive texture that can lift caked-on grime. Using a plastic-free scrubby pad along with baking soda makes a powerful scouring solution. Just remember to rinse surfaces well after heavy-duty scrubbing to avoid scratches.
