Cleaning and Disinfecting Kids’ Toys and Play Areas

As a busy parent, I know how important it is to keep my little ones’ toys and play areas clean and disinfected. Kids are like little germ factories, constantly sneezing, picking their noses, and putting everything in their mouths. While I want my kids to build up their immune systems, I also don’t want them swimming in a cesspool of germs.

The Importance of Cleaning and Disinfecting

Cleaning and sanitizing toys is crucial for maintaining a healthy, safe environment for our children. You see, those adorable little hands are constantly spreading all sorts of bacteria and viruses. From the floor to the toy box, germs can lurk everywhere. And when our kids put those toys in their mouths, well, let’s just say it’s a recipe for potential illness.

That’s why I make it a point to clean my kids’ toys every other week, or more frequently if they’ve been sick. I also try to stay on top of keeping their play areas clean by vacuuming or sweeping the floors weekly and not allowing shoes in those spaces.

Divide and Conquer

The first step in getting this done efficiently is to gather all the toys from the toy chest, play areas, diaper bags, bedrooms, and any other hiding spots. Bring them all into one central location, like the kitchen, so you can sort them into categories.

I like to divide the toys into four main groups:
1. Battery-operated toys
2. Soft toys (stuffed animals, discovery cubes, etc.)
3. Wooden toys (blocks, puzzles, trains)
4. Hard plastic toys

This sorting process helps me tackle each type of toy in the most effective way. Plus, it prevents me from accidentally submerging battery-operated toys in water, which could damage them.

Cleaning Soft Toys

For the soft toys, I simply toss them in the washing machine using my homemade, kid-friendly laundry soap. I even put them in the dryer without any issues. Once they’re clean and dry, they’re good to go back into the toy rotation.

Disinfecting Hard Plastic Toys

Next, I focus on the hard plastic toys. I start by rinsing out the sink and filling it with warm, soapy water. I use about 1/4 tsp of my DIY laundry soap or a squirt of Dawn dish soap to create the cleaning solution. Then, I dump all the hard plastic toys into the sink and let them soak for about 5 minutes, giving them a good swish around to get into all the nooks and crannies.

After the soak, I drain the sink and rinse the toys off with warm water. I make sure to squeeze any bath toys to release any trapped water. Then, I lay them out on a towel to air dry completely before putting them back into circulation.

Cleaning Wooden Toys

For the wooden toys, I take a different approach. I lay them out on a towel on the kitchen floor and give them a thorough spraying with my homemade disinfectant spray. I make this spray using equal parts white vinegar and water, and sometimes I’ll add a few drops of lemon or orange essential oil to cut the vinegar smell.

I make sure to get both sides of the wooden toys, waiting about 3 minutes between sprays. Once they’ve completely air dried, they’re ready to play with again.

Disinfecting Battery-Operated Toys

Since battery-operated toys can’t go in the sink, I have a special cleaning routine for them. I simply spray a rag with my disinfectant spray and wipe down the entire toy, making sure to get into all the nooks and crannies.

If my kids have a lot of battery-operated toys, I like to rotate them so I’m not spending an excessive amount of time cleaning them every single time. I’ll pick out 5 or 6 to have in the play area at a time, and the rest can go into storage. Then, when it’s time to clean, I’ll swap out the ones they’ve been playing with for a fresh batch from the storage bin.

Cleaning the Toy Box

And don’t forget about the toy box itself! I make sure to wipe down the inside and outside of the toy box with my disinfectant spray as well. This helps prevent any lingering germs from spreading to the freshly cleaned toys.

The Final Result

By following this comprehensive cleaning routine, I can rest easy knowing that my kids’ toys and play areas are as clean and disinfected as possible. It may take a bit of time and effort, but it’s worth it to keep my little ones happy and healthy.

Plus, regular cleaning and disinfecting can actually help extend the life of your kids’ toys, as it prevents the buildup of gunk and grime that can damage them over time. And let’s be honest, no one wants to play with a slimy, stinky toy!

So, the next time you’re faced with the daunting task of cleaning your kids’ toys and play areas, just remember to divide and conquer. Sort, clean, and disinfect, and you’ll have a sparkling, germ-free space in no time. Your kids (and your peace of mind) will thank you!
