Eco-Friendly Cleaning Swaps For a Low-Impact Routine

Going green with your cleaning routine is easier than you think! Small swaps can make a big difference for your health and the planet. Here are my top tips for creating an eco-friendly cleaning routine:

Switch to Natural Cleaning Products

Conventional cleaning products often contain toxic chemicals like ammonia, bleach, formaldehyde, and phthalates. These ingredients can cause issues like asthma, allergies, burns, and other health problems.

I switched to plant-based, biodegradable cleaners like vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and essential oils. They get the job done without harsh chemicals. Some of my go-to combinations are:

  • Vinegar and water for floors, counters, windows, mirrors, and more
  • Baking soda and water for scrubbing and deodorizing
  • Hydrogen peroxide for disinfecting and whitening
  • Lemon juice and essential oils like lavender to clean and freshen

Brands like Mrs. Meyer’s, Seventh Generation, and Ecover also offer great natural cleaning options. Check product labels and look for plant-based ingredients.

Use Microfiber Cloths and Mops

Microfiber cloths are a game-changer! The ultra-fine fibers grab and trap dirt and grease better than cotton, so you can clean with just water.

I switched all my rags and paper towels to reusable microfiber cloths. I also bought a microfiber mop and duster. They pick up dust and dirt without chemical sprays.

Microfibers are washable and reusable, so they generate less waste. I just throw mine in the laundry when they get dirty.

Opt for Reusable Items

Many cleaning tools are designed for single use then get tossed. I opted for reusable versions to reduce waste.

Instead of disposable wipes and paper towels, I use washable microfiber cloths. For mopping, I use reusable cotton pads and wash them after each use. I also changed my vacuum bags to reusable, washable ones.

At first, I was skeptical about how well the reusable options would work. But now, I’m a total convert after seeing how effective they are! The small extra effort to wash them is worth it for the environmental benefit.

Buy Consciously Sourced Cleaning Tools

Even when buying eco-friendly products, it’s important to consider the full supply chain. I try to select cleaning tools made from recycled, natural, or sustainably-sourced materials.

For example, I found a broom made from recycled plastic bottles and a mop handle constructed from FSC-certified wood. My newest vacuum uses 90% recycled parts.

Doing a bit of research to find consciously sourced cleaning tools keeps more waste out of landfills. These items also tend to be quite durable, so I won’t need to replace them often.

Make Your Own Cleaners

DIY cleaners are a budget-friendly way to control the ingredients. I make my own solutions using a few simple ingredients:

All-Purpose Cleaner

  • 1⁄2 cup vinegar
  • 1⁄4 cup baking soda
  • 10 drops essential oil (optional for scent)
  • Warm water

Glass & Mirror Cleaner

  • 2 cups water
  • 1⁄4 cup vinegar or lemon juice
  • Spray bottle

Scrubbing Cleaner

  • 1⁄2 cup baking soda
  • 10 drops essential oil (optional)
  • Few tablespoons warm water to form a paste

Customizing my own cleaners allows me to avoid harsh chemicals. I can tweak recipes as needed to suit different cleaning tasks. And it saves me money since I already have the ingredients at home.

Be Strategic With Disinfecting

Disinfecting the entirety of your home is often unnecessary. I reserve disinfectants for high-touch areas and when someone in my family is sick. This prevents over-disinfecting.

For targeted disinfecting, I use hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol on surfaces. This helps cut down on chemical usage.

Improve Ventilation

One of the best ways to maintain indoor air quality is simply airing out your space. I make an effort to open windows regularly to let fresh air circulate.

I also turn on my kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans when cooking, showering, and cleaning. And I change out AC filters every 3 months. Proper ventilation removes airborne irritants that cleaning products can leave behind.

Read Labels and Research

With so many products on the market, it can be tricky to know what’s actually eco-friendly. I always read ingredient lists closely and research brands I’m not familiar with.

The EPA’s Safer Choice program is a great resource – it certifies products that meet strict criteria for human and environmental health. I also look up product reviews and ask friends for recommendations to help find greener options.

Take Small Steps

Transitioning to low-waste cleaning doesn’t have to happen overnight. Start by swapping out one harsh cleaner at a time as products run out. Or designate just the bathroom or kitchen for green cleaning.

Every small change makes an impact. Over time, your new eco-friendly routine will become habit. And you’ll notice the benefits for your health, home, and the environment.

Making green cleaning swaps has really opened my eyes to how easy it can be. I used to assume I needed harsh chemicals for a spotless home, but reusable microfibers, natural cleaners, and other simple swaps do the job just as well. What changes have you found help “clean green” in your home? I’d love to hear your best low-impact tips!
