Introduction
Stainless steel and other metals play an important role in many homes. From kitchen appliances to decorative accents, metals add style, durability, and functionality. As I look around my home, I see stainless steel and other metals everywhere. In this article, I’ll share my experiences with common household metals and provide tips on keeping them looking their best.
Kitchen Appliances
The kitchen is where I encounter stainless steel the most in my home. From the refrigerator to the stove and dishwasher, stainless steel offers a modern look that is easy to coordinate with other kitchen finishes.
Refrigerator
My stainless steel refrigerator is the centerpiece of my kitchen. I chose stainless for its neutral color that blends well with the other appliances and cabinetry. Stainless is also easy to keep clean and fingerprint-resistant. I use a stainless steel cleaner and microfiber cloth to wipe down the exterior and handle to keep it looking brand new.
Stove
The stove is another workhorse stainless steel appliance in my kitchen. The stainless finish resists corrosion and is durable enough to withstand the heat of cooking. To keep it looking great, I make sure to wipe spills quickly and use a stainless steel polish on the surface every couple of months.
Dishwasher
While the exterior of my dishwasher has a stainless finish, the interior tub is actually made of plastic. I make sure to frequently wipe down the stainless exterior, especially around the handle and control panel, to prevent water spots and smudges.
Sinks and Fixtures
Kitchen and bathroom sinks and fixtures often contain metal finishes like brushed nickel that coordinate well with stainless steel.
Kitchen Faucet
I chose a brushed nickel kitchen faucet to match my other fixtures. To prevent water spots, I make sure to dry it thoroughly after washing dishes. I also use a small amount of olive oil on a soft cloth to buff the fixture and maintain the brushed metal look.
Bathroom Sink
My bathroom sink faucet boasts a beautiful oil-rubbed bronze finish. To keep it looking rich and warm, I make sure to rinse it well after use and apply a small amount of lemon oil to prevent mineral deposits. I also avoid harsh scrubbing and abrasive cleaners.
Decor and Furnishings
Metals like iron, copper, and brass make lovely decorative accents around the home. From furniture to wall art and lighting, statement pieces can add character and shine.
Metal Wall Decor
I have several metal wall hangings around my home, including a large iron floral medallion and small forged copper sconces. To prevent tarnishing and maintain their finish, I apply a coat of paste wax 2-3 times per year. This protects the metal from oxidation and fingerprints.
Brass Side Table
A small brass side table provides a glamorous touch next to my sofa. Since brass is prone to tarnishing, I make sure to dust it frequently with a soft cloth. Every couple of months, I also apply brass polish with a microfiber cloth to restore its brilliant shine.
Wrought Iron Patio Furniture
On my patio, I have a wrought iron bistro set. This type of furniture is susceptible to rust if left uncovered and exposed to the elements. I protect it by storing cushions indoors when not in use and applying a weatherproof sealant annually.
Conclusion
Stainless steel, nickel, bronze, iron, brass, and copper all add beauty and durability to my home, both inside and out. With regular cleaning and polishing, these metallic finishes maintain their luster and stand up well to heavy use. A little bit of maintenance goes a long way towards keeping these metals shining brightly around my home for years to come!
