Keeping a shower clean can seem daunting, but with the right techniques and products, you can keep it looking spotless! Here are some of my best tips for getting a sparkling clean shower.
Use Preventative Measures
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to shower cleaning. Here are some habits I practice to stop dirt and grime before it starts:
-
Hang a shower curtain liner inside the decorative curtain. The liner takes the brunt of the water and soap scum and can be easily removed and washed.
-
Use a squeegee after each shower. This removes excess water to prevent mineral deposits and soap scum build up.
-
Keep bath toys in a caddy when not in use so they don’t sit in the bottom of the shower collecting gunk.
-
Spray shower walls with water after getting out to rinse away residues from shampoos and soaps.
Deep Clean Regularly
No matter how diligent you are, you’ll need to deep clean your shower regularly to keep it pristine. Here’s my process:
Scrub Surfaces
-
Coat surfaces with a cleaning solution like vinegar, bathroom cleaner, or DIY baking soda paste. Let it sit 5-10 minutes.
-
Use a stiff brush or scrubbing pad to work the solution into the surfaces, paying special attention to soap scum and mineral deposits.
-
Rinse thoroughly with hot water. Repeat if needed for stubborn grime.
Target Grout
-
Dip an old toothbrush in baking soda or bathroom cleaner. Use it to scrub the grout lines. The angled bristles help get into the thin crevices.
-
For stubborn stains, let a grout pen or brush cleaner soak in for 10 minutes before scrubbing.
-
Rinse thoroughly once grout looks cleaner.
Clean Doors and Tracks
-
Spray glass shower doors with bathroom cleaner or vinegar solution. Let sit 5 minutes.
-
Use a grout brush to scrub the textured glass surface.
-
For metal tracks and hardware, dip a toothbrush in baking soda paste. Scrub tracks and rinse.
Finish by Disinfecting
-
Once all visible grime is removed, spray all surfaces with a disinfecting cleaner or bleach solution.
-
Let sit at least 10 minutes before a final rinse. This kills mold and mildew that could be lingering.
Maintain In-Between Deeper Cleans
To keep your shower sparking, do mini cleans between deeper sessions:
-
Spray down surfaces with cleaner after each use to prevent buildup.
-
Scrub walls monthly with a brush and bathroom cleaner.
-
Remove shower curtain liner and wash in machine or tub when it gets grimy.
-
Replace shower pouf monthly to avoid mold and bacteria.
-
Re-caulk yearly if existing caulk gets grimy or develops cracks and mildew.
