Boost Your Wellbeing with a Decluttered, Clean Home

I’ll admit it – I’m a total Marie Kondo convert. Every year, like clockwork, I go on a decluttering rampage, purging our home of all the extra stuff that’s managed to creep in over the past twelve months. And you know what? I get a little bit better at it each time.

These days, I’m far less of a “stuff manager” than I used to be. Gone are the days where I’d spend hours upon hours in our unfinished basement, moving piles of junk from one spot to another, futilely trying to organize it all. Nope, I’ve finally realized that the real problem was that I had way too much stuff to begin with.

That’s why these days, my focus is on decluttering – and I’m trying to instill these same habits in my kids as well. It’s not always easy, let me tell you. My older daughter, in particular, has a real attachment to her toys and trinkets. But I’ve come to see that the issue isn’t that she can’t keep her room clean – it’s that she has too much stuff to begin with, leaving her feeling constantly overwhelmed as the “manager” of all those material possessions.

But you know what? I’m realizing more and more that decluttering isn’t just about creating a tidy, organized home – it’s also about boosting your overall health and wellbeing. And that’s why I’m so excited to share what I’ve learned about the incredible benefits of decluttering, from improved indoor air quality to better mental focus and mood.

Decluttering for a Healthier Home Environment

Our homes are filled with all kinds of materials and products that can have a major impact on the quality of our indoor air. But the good news is, we have the power to control a lot of those factors by being intentional about what we bring into our spaces – and what we choose to get rid of.

One big category to watch out for? Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). These are chemicals that can off-gas into the air we breathe, and they’re found in all sorts of common household items, from paint and cleaning products to certain types of furniture and building materials. Some VOCs, like formaldehyde, have even been labeled as known carcinogens.

The more stuff you have cluttering up your home, the more VOCs you’re exposing yourself and your family to on a daily basis. That’s why decluttering can be such a powerful way to improve your indoor air quality – by getting rid of unnecessary items, you’re automatically reducing the number of potential toxins floating around.

And it’s not just VOCs you have to worry about. Dust is another major culprit when it comes to compromising indoor air quality. The more surfaces and knick-knacks you have in your home, the more places dust can accumulate. And dust often contains all kinds of unsavory stuff, from chemicals and pesticides to viruses and bacteria.

By paring down your possessions through decluttering, you’re immediately creating less surface area for dust to collect. That means fewer allergens and contaminants circulating in your air – and a whole lot less time spent dusting!

Let’s not forget about fragrances, either. These synthetic scents are found in everything from air fresheners and cleaning products to bedding and home decor. And they’re not just masking foul odors – they’re also loaded with hormone-disrupting chemicals that can take a toll on your health. Ditching anything with synthetic fragrances is a fantastic way to reduce the toxic burden on your body.

Decluttering for Mental Health and Focus

But the benefits of decluttering go way beyond just improving your physical environment. There’s also a strong connection between a cluttered home and your mental wellbeing.

Think about it – when your living space is overflowing with stuff, it can feel overwhelming and stressful, constantly pulling at your attention. All those piles of belongings become a form of mental clutter, making it harder for your brain to focus and feel at ease.

Numerous studies have found that living in a cluttered environment can actually increase your stress levels, even if you don’t consciously notice the impact. And that chaos and lack of focus can spill over into other areas of your life, impacting your productivity, creativity, and overall mood.

On the flip side, the simple act of cleaning and organizing has been shown to have a soothing, calming effect. There’s a sense of accomplishment and control that comes with decluttering, which can be a huge mood-booster, especially when you’re feeling frazzled.

Even just the sight of a clean, uncluttered space can help you unwind and destress after a long, hectic day. It’s like giving your mind a little mental refresh – one that allows you to be more present and focused on the task at hand.

Making Decluttering a Habit

I know, I know – decluttering can feel like such an overwhelming task, especially when you’ve let things spiral out of control. But the key is to start small and chip away at it bit by bit.

Instead of trying to tackle your entire home in one big weekend purge, commit to doing just one small thing each day. Maybe it’s going through the mail, cleaning out a drawer, or picking up all the clothes scattered around the living room. The important thing is to make steady progress, no matter how small.

Another strategy that’s worked well for me is the timer method. Set a timer for 15-20 minutes, then see how much cleaning and organizing you can get done in that short burst of time. It’s amazing how much you can accomplish when you put your mind to it! Plus, the sense of accomplishment you feel when the timer goes off is a great mental boost.

And if you’re really struggling to stay on top of things, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Enlist your partner, kids, or even a friend to lend a hand. Many hands make light work, as they say. Or consider hiring a professional cleaning service to take care of the heavy lifting while you focus on the day-to-day maintenance.

The key is to find a system that works for you and your lifestyle. Because the benefits of decluttering are just too good to pass up – from improved indoor air quality to better mental focus and mood. Trust me, once you experience the joys of living in a clutter-free, toxin-free home, you’ll never want to go back.
