Freshen Your

Ah, the humble garbage disposal – that unsung hero of the kitchen sink that quietly whisks away our culinary leftovers, leaving no trace behind. But let’s be honest, when was the last time you gave that little cleaning wonder a good scrub-down? If the answer is “Uhh, never?” then you’re definitely not alone.

I’ll admit, for the longest time, I was utterly terrified of my own garbage disposal. That black, gaping maw just waiting to devour an unsuspecting finger – no thank you! I’d rather just let the gunk and grime build up until the whole thing started belching at me every time I turned it on. Rookie mistake, I know.

Little did I realize, keeping that disposal in tip-top shape is actually essential for both hygiene and functionality. According to the pros, a feral garbage disposal can create all sorts of undesirable smells and even start to underperform over time. Yikes! So, I knew it was time to finally face my fears and learn how to properly clean and maintain this kitchen essential.

The Ice Cube Cure

The first method I tried was the Ice Cube technique, as recommended by Eric Schultz, director of product management at InSinkErator. The beauty of this approach is that it’s about as hands-off as it gets. No scrubbing, no harsh chemicals – just a simple mix of ice cubes, baking soda, and lemon slices.

Here’s how it works: You just pack 2 cups of ice cubes, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and 1 lemon slice into your garbage disposal and let the grinder do its thing. The cold ice helps break up any stuck-on food, the baking soda provides a gentle scrubbing action, and the citrusy lemon helps deodorize everything. It may fizz a bit at first, but don’t worry – those little disposal flaps keep everything nicely contained.

The Lemon-Only Approach

If you’re looking for an even simpler solution, Jennifer Rodriguez, the chief hygiene officer at Pro Housekeepers, recommends just using plain old lemons. The acidity of the lemon juice can cut through grease and grime, and lemon’s antibacterial properties help fight odors, too.

Just take a lemon, cut it into wedges (including the peel), and feed each piece into the running disposal one by one. The blades grinding through the rind will even help clean them, leaving your disposal smelling fresh and lemony.

The Vinegar Vortex

If you’re more of a vinegar fan, the team at Moody Maids has another effective trick up their sleeve. They use a baking soda and apple cider vinegar combo to really give the disposal a deep clean. Simply pour in 1/2 cup of baking soda, followed by 1 cup of vinegar, and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then, run some hot water and turn on the disposal until the mixture and any lingering debris has been flushed away.

The Power Flush

Now, when those Thanksgiving dinner leftovers have really taken their toll, Schultz recommends the Power Flush method for a more thorough cleanse. This involves plugging your sink, filling it with cold water about three-quarters full, then turning on the disposal and letting the water flush everything out.

Schultz says this “will typically do an excellent job of cleaning out the disposer grind chamber along with several feet of the downstream drain pipe.” Talk about a deep clean!

Maintenance Matters

Regardless of which method you choose, the experts agree that cleaning your garbage disposal once a month is a good rule of thumb. But to keep the gunk and odor buildup to a minimum in between, there are a few other best practices to keep in mind.

For starters, Schultz says it’s essential to always run cold water while using the disposal, so any fats stay congealed and can get chopped up. And when you’re done grinding, let the water run for an extra 10 seconds before shutting it off – this helps flush everything through.

What you put down the drain can make a big difference, too. According to Rodriguez, you’ll want to avoid things like oils, hot grease, seafood shells, corn husks, potatoes, banana peels, and artichokes – they can all cause issues. And Sayeh adds a firm “no bones” to the list as well.

A Happy Ending After All

I’ll admit, when I first encountered my garbage disposal, I was practically writing the screenplay for a full-on culinary-themed horror movie. But after learning these simple tips and tricks, I can confidently say that my disposal nightmares have been thoroughly freshened – and hopefully, yours will be too.

So, the next time you hear that familiar grind and groan coming from your sink, don’t panic. Grab some ice cubes, lemons, or a bit of vinegar, and show that disposal who’s boss. With a little TLC, you can keep that black mysterious hole running smoothly and smelling lemony-fresh for years to come. Happy cleaning, my friends!
