The Oven Dilemma
I have to admit, I never really paid attention to the inside of my oven door. I simply ignored the fact that baked-on food had been accumulating for years. While there are lots of tips and tricks on how to clean a glass oven door, I love this method because it uses one simple, natural ingredient: baking soda.
Let me start by showing you an embarrassing picture of my glass oven door. As noted, I had never cleaned it the 5+ years we lived in our house; and let’s be honest, I’m guessing the previous owners probably didn’t clean it often either. This means I could be dealing with 14 years of greasy, grimy, baked-on food. Yuck!
The Baking Soda Solution
To tackle this daunting task, I turned to the trusty ingredient that can seemingly clean anything – baking soda. According to Lemons, Lavender, & Laundry, the key is to liberally sprinkle baking soda all over the glass oven door, then wet down a scour pad and start moving the baking soda around until you get a thick paste.
The goal is to cover the entire glass oven door with this baking soda paste. If the paste is too thick and clumpy, you can add more water; if it’s too thin and runny, simply toss in some more baking soda. After letting the paste sit for 30-60 minutes, it’s time to get scrubbing.
Grab that scour pad again, wet it down, and start scrubbing in small sections. You’ll be amazed at how well this works to remove the caked-on grime. Once you’ve scrubbed the whole door, use a wet sponge to clean up any remaining baking soda paste.
Stubborn Stains
Now, I have to be honest – even after this thorough cleaning, there were still a few stubborn brown stains that just wouldn’t budge. Not to be deterred, I decided to repeat the process, but this time I let the baking soda paste sit overnight.
In the morning, I resumed scrubbing, and voila! Those last bits of burnt-on food were no match for the power of baking soda. My oven door was sparkling clean, like a mirror!
Lemons, Lavender, & Laundry suggests that if you still have some stubborn areas, you can try using a razor blade scraper tool. These razors are made specifically for cleaning glass surfaces on oven doors and stovetops.
The Science Behind Baking Soda
You might be wondering, why is baking soda so effective at cleaning oven doors? Well, it’s all thanks to its natural (mild) abrasive properties. Baking soda gently scrubs away the stains, grease, and grime that have built up over time.
But the real magic happens when the baking soda starts to absorb those tough stains. You can actually see the baking soda change from bright white to a brownish mess as it pulls out the dirt from the glass. Pretty cool, right?
While using baking soda takes a bit more time and effort than harsh chemical cleaners, it’s certainly worth it to avoid those harmful chemicals. Plus, you can feel good knowing you’re cleaning your oven in a more natural and eco-friendly way.
A Sparkling Clean Oven
Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m absolutely thrilled with the results of this baking soda cleaning method. My oven door is sparkling clean, and I can see my floor through the glass – it’s like a mirror!
