Step 1: Declutter and Organize
The first step in my spring cleaning system is to declutter and organize every room. I go through each room and sort items into “keep”, “donate”, “trash”, and “relocate” piles. This process removes clutter and ensures I only keep items I need and use.
I start by decluttering and organizing the entryway, kitchen, living room, bedrooms, bathroom, and any other spaces. For the kitchen, I go through the pantry, fridge, cabinets, drawers, and counters. I get rid of expired food, chipped dishes, duplicate utensils, etc. I also reorganize dishes, pots and pans, and food storage containers so they are neat and accessible.
In the living room, I go through shelves, storage ottomans, cabinets, and under furniture. I donate unused decor, get rid of old magazines and books, and rearrange items for a more streamlined look. I follow this same decluttering process for every room in the house.
Step 2: Clean Surfaces and Floors
After decluttering, I move on to deep cleaning all surfaces and floors in each room.
I start by vacuuming and mopping floors throughout the house. I move furniture to access hard-to-reach areas. For carpets, I use my vacuum’s strongest suction setting to remove embedded dirt and dust.
Next, I clean all hard surfaces like countertops, cabinets, walls, mirrors etc. In the kitchen and bathrooms I disinfect surfaces too. Glass cleaner makes mirrors, windows, and glass shower doors sparkle. I scrub sinks, tiles, and fixtures to remove soap scum and hard water stains.
I also launder all linens like sheets, towels, shower curtains, and rugs. Washing these items prevents the buildup of germs, odors, and stains over time. Fresh linens make the whole house feel clean for spring.
Step 3: Target Seasonal Cleaning Tasks
In addition to general cleaning, my spring system includes targeted tasks to refresh the home after winter. I focus on areas that need special attention like filters, windows, and outdoor spaces.
Some key seasonal tasks include:
- Cleaning ceiling fan blades
- Washing walls and baseboards
- Cleaning fridge coils and vents
- Changing furnace filter
- Washing windows and screens
- Hosing down outdoor furniture and grills
Targeting these spots prevents dirt buildup and maximizes freshness entering spring. Thorough seasonal cleaning also keeps homes looking and feeling their best year-round.
Step 4: Organize Closets and Storage Areas
After cleaning individual rooms, I organize and refresh closets and other storage areas. For closets, I:
- Remove everything and clean shelves and rods
- Toss or donate anything I haven’t worn in over a year
- Arrange clothes seasonally – warmer clothes in the back, cooler clothes in the front
- Use shelves for sweaters, purses, and folded items
- Use hanging organizers for accessories, belts, and ties
For basements, attics, garages, and other storage spaces I:
- Go through boxes and storage containers
- Label boxes clearly for easy access later
- Discard anything expired or unneeded
- Consider installing shelves or systems to maximize space
Getting closets and storage areas organized makes it easier to maintain order all year long.
Step 5: Enjoy a Fresh, Clean Home for Spring
My five-step spring cleaning system allows me to thoroughly declutter, clean, and organize my entire home just in time for spring. By breaking big tasks down into manageable steps, I can tackle each area effectively without getting overwhelmed.
The results are amazing – every room looks refreshed, smells clean, and functions better after my spring cleaning routine. Maintaining order just takes a little upkeep through the seasons. I feel proud and happy in my clean, welcoming home all spring long!
