Learning to Live With Less

I remember a time not so long ago when the majority of my worldly possessions could fit into a single suitcase. It was during a period in my life when I had gone broke after graduating university and needed to drastically downsize. At the time, it felt like a massive sacrifice, selling off most of what I owned just to keep my struggling online business afloat.

Looking back now, I realize that getting rid of all that unnecessary stuff was one of the best decisions I ever made. Not only did it free up space, both physically and mentally, but it also unlocked a newfound sense of freedom that I had never experienced before. Gone were the burdens of ownership – the constant maintenance, the nagging feelings of guilt for not using certain items, the hassle of moving it all from place to place. In their place, I found a lightness, a clarity, that allowed me to focus on what truly mattered.

As I would later learn, this fundamental shift in mindset is at the heart of the minimalist philosophy. It’s not about depriving yourself or living an ascetic existence, but rather about being intentional with the things you choose to surround yourself with. It’s about recognizing that the true source of happiness and fulfillment doesn’t come from accumulating more possessions, but from investing in experiences, relationships, and a life well-lived.

As I’ve discovered, the key is to start small and go at your own pace. Begin by decluttering your living space, getting rid of the things you no longer use or need. Then, shift your focus to the larger, more sentimental items, carefully considering what truly brings you joy and what you can live without.

And remember, minimalism isn’t about depriving yourself or living an ascetic existence. It’s about finding the right balance – keeping only the things that enhance your life and bringing in new possessions with intentionality and purpose.
