A cluttered, disorganized garage can make your home feel chaotic and stressful. Taking the time to purge unnecessary items and organize the space can create a clean slate and a fresh start. With some planning, effort, and dedication, I transformed my messy garage into a functional area I’m proud of.
Take Inventory and Purge Items
The first step is to take inventory and honestly evaluate what can be removed from the garage. I recommend setting aside several hours and working in sections.
Go Through All Storage Areas
- Carefully go through shelves, cabinets, and any other storage spaces. Remove items that are:
- Broken or damaged beyond repair
- Expired like old paints and cleaners
- Unused for over a year
- Duplicate items you don’t need
- Things that belong inside the house
- Discard trash and recycle applicable items.
- Donate gently used items in good condition.
- Sell any valuable items to declutter and earn extra money.
Evaluate Large Items
- Review all large items like ladders, coolers, tools, and holiday decor.
- Keep regularly used items in good condition.
- Remove anything you haven’t used in years.
- Offer bulky furniture and sports equipment to family or sell online.
Seasonal and Sentimental Items
- Limit sentimental items to a few small keepsake boxes.
- Store off-season sports gear and holiday decor efficiently. Use clear bins and label the contents.
Organize Garage Areas
Once everything is purged and decluttered, it’s time to organize. Think through how you want to use the space and create designated areas.
Parking Stall
- Keep this area completely clear for vehicle parking.
- Install wall hooks near the door to hang keys, purse, and coat.
- Consider a small shade or plants in one corner to add some life.
Work Bench
- Position a sturdy workbench for DIY projects on the back wall.
- Mount pegboard above to hold tools in an organized fashion.
- Keep a toolbox on the bench with essential tools and supplies.
Sports Zone
- Use wall-mounted racks to store items like bikes, skis, hockey sticks, etc.
- Keep protective sports gear in bins or cabinets.
- Consider a fold-out table for equipment maintenance.
Shelving Units
- Install industrial shelving units for household items, automotive supplies, paints, cleaners, etc.
- Categorize shelves by type of item. Label shelves for easy identification.
- Frequently used items should go at eye level. Place infrequent items up high or down low.
Keep It Organized
Maintaining the organization will allow you to fully utilize the space. Make it a habit to keep things clean and in their designated spots.
- Put items away immediately after using them.
- Sweep the floor regularly.
- Do occasional “purge days” to prevent clutter from building up again.
- Re-organize if needed as hobbies or interests change.
With consistent upkeep, your garage can remain clutter-free and become an extension of your home. The sense of satisfaction from parking inside a clean garage is priceless. Use this newfound space to pursue your goals and hobbies.
