Spring is here and it’s time to freshen up your home with some spring cleaning. Adding a lovely lavender scent throughout your home is an easy way to give it a clean, refreshed feel. Here’s how to get a lavender scented home this spring.
Use Lavender Cleaning Products
One of the easiest ways to make your home smell like lavender is to use cleaning products that contain the scent. Lavender essential oil is commonly added to all-purpose cleaners, floor cleaners, laundry detergents and more.
When shopping for cleaning supplies, look for words like “lavender,” “floral,” or “spring fresh” on the labels. Brands like Mrs. Meyer’s, Method, Seventh Generation, and Ecover often have lavender scented varieties of their cleaners. Be sure to check the actual scent name as sometimes “floral” or “spring” scents are blended with other flower aromas besides just lavender.
I like to use lavender laundry detergent and dryer sheets so my towels, sheets, and blankets have a light pretty scent. Wiping down surfaces with a lavender scented all-purpose cleaner makes the whole room smell fresh and clean.
Simmer Potpourri or Essential Oils
Another way to scent your home with lavender is by simmering potpourri or essential oils. You can find pre-made lavender potpourri sachets at craft stores, bath and body shops, or online. Simply fill a small pot with water, drop in the sachet, and let it simmer on the stove for a few hours as the scent is released into your home.
For a more pure lavender aroma, add a few drops of lavender essential oil into water in a pot and simmer. You can also use an essential oil diffuser to distribute the lavender smell throughout your home without simmering. Just add several drops of oil and turn the diffuser on.
I like to keep a big bag of lavender potpourri or a bottle of lavender oil on hand so I can easily make my home smell fresh and floral, especially after cooking odors or when I have guests coming over.
Hang Dried Lavender Bunches
Drying fresh lavender and hanging bouquets around your home is a great way to naturally scent it. You can buy bundles of dried lavender at craft stores and hang them in entryways, bedrooms, bathrooms, closets, etc.
I like to hang small lavender bundles on doorknobs or tuck them into dresser drawers to lightly fragrance our clothes and linens. Place larger bundles in bowls or tie them with ribbon to hang on walls or cabinets. The dried buds will continue releasing their sweet floral aroma for weeks.
Clean with Lavender
While store bought cleaners are convenient, you can also make your own homemade lavender cleaning products using essential oils. Not only will they leave behind a lovely scent as you clean, they are also inexpensive and contain natural ingredients that are safe for your home and family.
Some easy homemade cleaner recipes are:
-
All-purpose lavender spray – In a spray bottle, mix 2 cups water, 1/4 cup white vinegar, and 15 drops lavender essential oil. Shake well before each use.
-
Lavender laundry detergent – Mix 1 cup grated soap flakes or liquid castile soap, 1/2 cup washing soda, and 15 drops lavender essential oil. Use 1-2 tbsp per load.
-
Lavender floor cleaner – Combine in a bucket 2 gallons hot water, 1/4 cup liquid castile soap or Murphy’s oil soap, and 20 drops lavender essential oil.
Wiping down surfaces and mopping floors with these homemade concoctions leaves everything clean, disinfected, and smelling divine.
Add Lavender to Storage Areas
Place sachets or small bundles of dried lavender in storage areas around your home to give cleaned closets, cupboards, and drawers a light floral scent.
Tuck lavender into:
- Dresser drawers
- Jewelry boxes
- Bedside tables
- Kitchen cabinets and pantries
- Coat and linen closets
As you open and access these storage spaces, you’ll be greeted with lovely bursts of lavender. I like to sew small lavender sachets out of pretty fabric to use. They make great gifts too!
Mist Bedding and Upholstery with Lavender Spray
Misting fabric surfaces like sheets, duvets, pillows, curtains, and upholstered furniture with a lavender water spray is an easy way to freshen them. Simply fill a clean spray bottle with water and add 20-30 drops of lavender essential oil. Lightly mist items and the scent will bloom as they dry.
This is perfect to do while making beds or after dusting and vacuuming a room. The lavender aroma is relaxing and welcoming. For stronger scent, spray items again after they fully dry.
Wash Linens in Lavender Detergent
Switching to a lavender scented laundry detergent to wash your sheets, towels, blankets, and cloth napkins is an effortless way to make them freshly floral smelling. I like to use lavender detergent when washing bed linens so I can climb into deliciously scented sheets at night.
For extra fragrance, you can also add a few drops of lavender essential oil straight into the washing machine drum along with your detergent. Your linens with come out gently scented with lavender’s sweet, clean aroma.
Grow Fresh Lavender
Finally, for delightful bursts of floral fragrance all season long, plant some fresh lavender bushes around your home and gardens. You can find young lavender plants at most garden centers in spring. English lavender varieties like Munstead, Hidcote, and Vera thrive in pots on patios and walkways so you can enjoy their flowers and scent up close.
Grow lavender in full sun and well-drained soil. As the purple blooms open in summer, run your fingers through the fragrant foliage or cut some stems to bring indoors. Float lavender sprigs in lemonade or iced tea, display small bouquets in vases, or hang bundles to dry.
Lavender is such a lovely, aromatic flower. With a few simple tips, you can easily scent every room of your home with its fresh, floral aroma this spring. A lavender scented home is clean, welcoming, and relaxing – the perfect setting for the new season.
