Spring has sprung! The weather is warming up and it’s time to start thinking about freshening up our outdoor living spaces. A good spring cleaning of porches and patios can make them feel brand new again. Here are some tips and tricks for a thorough springtime clean.
Assess the Situation
First, take a good look at your porch or patio and make note of what needs to be cleaned or repaired.
- Check for any cracks, holes, loose boards, or other damage that may have occurred over the winter. Make a list of any fixes that need to be made.
- Look for dirt, leaves, pollen, and other debris that may have collected.
- Examine outdoor furniture and accessories and decide what needs to be washed, repaired, repainted, or replaced.
Making a list will help me tackle everything efficiently and not miss any important tasks.
Sweep Away Debris
One of the most satisfying parts of spring cleaning is sweeping away all the dirt and debris that accumulated over the cold months.
- Use a stiff broom or outdoor broom to sweep floor boards, steps, railings, and other solid surfaces. Sweep debris over the edges to remove it.
- For stone, brick, or concrete patios, use a stiff bristle broom or power broom to agitate and loosen debris. A leaf blower can help blow away loose dirt.
- Don’t forget to sweep away spider webs and cobwebs too!
Sweeping away all the debris will instantly make the space look fresher and cleaner.
Scrub Away Grime
After sweeping, it’s time to scrub away stuck-on winter grime and reveal the surface below.
- For wood surfaces, use a wood cleaner or solution of warm water and dish soap. Scrub with a stiff bristle brush.
- For stone, brick, or concrete, use a pressure washer to blast away grime. Or scrub by hand with a stiff bristle brush and degreasing cleaner.
- For metal surfaces, remove rust with a rust remover and steel wool. Buff to shine.
- Don’t forget outdoor railings, windows, and light fixtures. Clean thoroughly.
Proper scrubbing will get rid of leftover salt, mud, and built-up dirt from the winter months.
Check for Damage
Now that the porch or patio is clean, it’s easier to see any damage or deterioration that may have occurred over the winter.
- Carefully inspect wood surfaces for any cracks, holes, splinters, rot, or separation. Make all necessary repairs.
- Check for missing or damaged grout between bricks or stones. Re-grout as needed.
- Examine outdoor railings, steps, and structures for sturdiness and defects. Strengthen or mend anything rickety.
- Freshen up paint where needed. Use exterior primer and paint.
Fixing damage and refreshing worn surfaces will help protect and extend the life of your porch or patio.
Freshen Up Furnishings
Outdoor furniture and accessories probably took a beating over the winter too. Refresh them with a good cleaning.
- Wash outdoor cushions and slipcovers. Let air dry before replacing.
- Use soapy water to wash down plastic, metal, or wicker furniture. Rinse well.
- Wood furniture can be cleaned with a wood cleaner and soft brush.
- Re-stain worn wooden furniture if needed. Apply new polyurethane sealant when dry.
- Clean and repair any umbrella stands, mats, pots, or other accessories.
Thoroughly cleaning all the furnishings will have your porch or patio looking its best for spring and summer enjoyment!
Add Decorative Touches
To finish off your spring porch or patio refresh, add some colorful and inspiring decorative touches.
- Add planters or flower pots with bright spring blooms. Opt for cheery pastels or bold primary colors.
- Set out new outdoor cushions and pillows in fun patterns and textures.
- Hang up wind chimes and bird houses.
- Arrange an outdoor accent rug or fresh new doormat.
- Display new vases, candles, or artwork.
Decorating your newly cleaned space helps welcome spring! Don’t forget to do a quick sweep or wash periodically to maintain the space all season long. Get ready to enjoy your fresh start!
