Keeping your cleaning supplies organised can make cleaning your home much easier and more efficient. As someone who likes to keep a tidy home, I have learned some helpful tips for organising all my cleaners, sprays, rags and other supplies. Here are the easiest ways I’ve found to organise cleaning products.
Categorise Your Cleaning Supplies
The first step is to categorise all your various cleaning supplies. This helps you see what you have and makes it easier to organise them logically. Some common categories include:
- Surface cleaners – All-purpose cleaners, window/glass cleaners, stainless steel cleaners, etc.
- Bathroom cleaners – Toilet cleaners, shower cleaners, tile cleaners, etc.
- Floor cleaners – Floor wax, mops, brooms, vacuum cleaners.
- Laundry supplies – Detergents, bleaches, fabric softeners, stain removers.
- Kitchen cleaners – Disinfecting wipes, oven cleaners, degreasers.
- Tools and accessories – Sponges, cleaning gloves, buckets, scrub brushes.
Grouping similar items together like this makes it easier to find what you need later.
Use Clear Storage Containers
Once you’ve categorised everything, the next step is to corral all those bottles, sprays, and packages into organised storage. Clear plastic containers that stack neatly work great for this. Some key points:
- Get containers with labels so you can clearly mark what’s inside.
- Containers with lids keep things neatly contained.
- Stackable containers help maximise space.
- Clear plastic lets you easily see inside.
I like to designate one container for each cleaning category, neatly labelled – Bathroom, Kitchen, Glass & Surface Cleaners, etc.
Store Cleaning Tools Together
The various brushes, sponges, buckets and other cleaning accessories also need a home. I use a couple of strategies:
- A plastic caddy or bucket for portable cleaning tools. I carry this from room to room.
- Wall-mounted storage in utility rooms or garages for brooms, mops, and vacuums.
Hanging tools on the wall keeps them handy but out of the way. I outline each tool’s shape on the wall with painter’s tape so I know exactly where it goes.
Find a Central, Accessible Location
Storing your organised cleaning supplies in a central, easy to access spot is key. Under the kitchen sink works great if you have room. A hall closet near the bathroom is another prime spot. The main factors are:
- Near areas that need frequent cleaning like kitchen & bathroom
- Doesn’t require lugging supplies up/down stairs
- Provides enough space for containers & tools
- Keep it accessible but out of the main living areas
I use slide-out trays and rotational lazy susans in my under-sink cabinets to neatly arrange all my supplies. This makes it so easy to just grab what I need.
Maintain the System!
The last critical step is maintaining your tidy organisation over time. Some helpful habits include:
- Putting supplies back into proper containers after using.
- Doing a quick categorising check when you get new products.
- Cleaning containers occasionally to keep neat.
- Reviewing if certain items are used rarely and could be removed.
A little effort up front to effectively organise your cleaning arsenal can save you time, frustration, and hassle for years to come. Give these tips a try – I know your inner neat freak will thank you! Let me know if you have any other clever solutions for keeping cleaning supplies organised.
